WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE SONY HD 500 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2006.
Kasey Kahne led eight times for 130 laps to win the WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race award in the Sony HD 500. Kahne claimed the honor for the second time this season. He has led 33 times in nine races for a total of 499 laps this season. Kahne led the most laps for the first time since the Coca-Cola 600 (race No. 12).
Kahne won Sunday night’s race and is UNOFFICIALLY 11th in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, 30 points behind 10th-place Jeff Burton. Kahne also led the most laps in the race, scoring the maximum number of points available.
KAHNE QUOTES: “Winning the WIX Filters Lap Leader award was just icing on the cake tonight. This is all we could do. We did everything possible. We gained the most points we could possibly gain on a weekend. We cut it down. We just need to do our best next weekend and see where the points end up. Hopefully we’ll be on the right side of it.”
Kahne score his fifth victory of the 2006 season, most of all drivers. He gave Dodge their first victory in a NEXTEL Cup race at California Speedway since the track opened in 1997. Kahne scored his fourth top-10 finish in six races at California Speedway.
The victory was Kahne’s fifth in 75 career superspeedway starts.
