Sharpie 500 - WIX Filters Lap Leader Notes

WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE SHARPIE 500 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY, AUGUST 26, 2006.

  • Jeff Burton led five times for 263 laps to win the WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race award in the Sharpie 500. Burton claimed the honor for the second time this season. He has led 24 times in 10 races for a total of 560 laps this season. Burton led the most laps for the first time since the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard (race No. 21).
  • The Sharpie 500 was the first short track race this season that Burton has led a lap.
  • Burton finished ninth at Bristol, his best finish on a short track in 2006. He collected his 14th top-10 finish in Saturday night’s race.
  • Burton is seventh in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings. He trails sixth-place Denny Hamlin by six points and leads eighth-place Tony Stewart by eight.
  • BURTON QUOTES: “Certainly winning the WIX Filters Lap Leader award is a great thing. Leading laps is a great thing. I’m real happy with the laps that we did lead and real happy with the speed that we had. I’m a little disappointed in our finish. But it’s a good thing when you’re disappointed with a top-10 leaving Bristol. It’s as much my fault as anybody’s. We’ll keep working and keep pushing. I’m proud of us; I’m disappointed in us at the same time [smile]. WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT LAST PIT STOP? “The last two stops we lost quite a few spots but our speeds were fine. If you look at our pit stops, they were fine. I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. We got busted for speeding last night and we weren’t going to speed. We had 13-second pit stops and got beat by four cars. It’s right after the race so I’m disappointed, but by Monday I’ll realize that things aren’t as bad as I feel like they are right now. We’ll keep digging and keep trying to be better and keep trying to improve. Again, I feel good about our team. We’ve just got to be better in some areas and when I say we I’m including myself.”
