Sharpie 500 - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET)
VENUE: BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY (.533-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 24 OF 36)
EVENT: SATURDAY, AUG. 26 (500 LAPS, 266.5 MILES)

BULLRING SUCCESS: Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 5 Kellogg's Chevrolet, has made nine starts on short tracks in his young NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series career. In those nine races, he's posted four top-five finishes and six top-10 results.

'5' SOLID AT SHORT TRACKS: Busch has been near the front in each of the three NEXTEL Cup races held at short tracks in 2006. He was eighth at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in March, fifth at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway in April and fifth at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway in May. Busch and Kevin Harvick are the only Cup drivers to post top-10 finishes at all three short tracks this season.

EIGHT WOULD BE GREAT: A victory Saturday night would mark the eighth at Bristol for car owner Rick Hendrick and tie him with Richard Childress and Roger Penske for third on the track's all-time win list. Only Junior Johnson (21) and Holman-Moody (9) would have more.

BRINGING BACK 317: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 317 for Saturday night's NEXTEL Cup race at Bristol. The car finished eighth at the half-mile track in March.

BRISTOL TRIFECTA: At Bristol, Busch will run the Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup events for Hendrick Motorsports, along with Wednesday evening's Craftsman Truck Series race in a Chevrolet Silverado fielded by Billy Ballew.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET: (ON THE TEAM'S BAD LUCK AT MICHIGAN.) "When you blow a tire, it's out of your control, but unfortunately we took a big hit in the points. Losing two spots now is unacceptable. We will have to be perfect in the next three races if we want a chance to be in the Chase."

BUSCH: (ON BRISTOL.) "It's a tough track and you have to start up front and stay up front because it only takes about five laps for the leader to catch the tail end of the field. I've been working out pretty hard at home with a weight shaped like a steering wheel. My trainer said it will help build up my forearm muscles since at Bristol you turn left every three seconds. In addition to being a mentally tough race track, it's physically tough as well. I know by running all three races I will be pretty tired, but I think I'm up to the challenge."

BUSCH: (ON STRATEGY.) "Our only goal this weekend is to finish the race in the best position possible. We need a top-10 and we need guys around us in points to finish behind us. There are 13 drivers going for 10 spots and its getting a little crowded. Every one of those guys who are on the edge will have the same attitude as we do so it's going to be a test of who is the best. I'm hoping the amount of laps I turn in the Truck and Busch Series races will help me on Saturday night."

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET: (ON BRISTOL.) "We had a good run at Bristol in the spring. We qualified 20th and ended up eighth at the end of the day. It's a long, long race and anything can happen. We say this every race, but we need to get our stuff together. We've had something go wrong in every race since New Hampshire and, with the exception of last weekend, we have overcome adversity every single time. Our main priority this weekend is to finish in the top-10. Last week we had at least a top-five car, but ended up hitting the wall and having to bring it to the garage to repair. We don't want to have to deal with this stuff in the next three (races). We've got to get through this weekend unscathed. If we don't, we'll have to be perfect at California and Richmond. If we can't do that, then we don't deserve to be in the Chase. This race team is a lot better than the results have shown lately."
