Bass Pro Shops 500 - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET)
VENUE: ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY (1.54-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 33 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, OCT. 29, 2006 (325 LAPS, 500.5 MILES)

BUSCH THREE TIMES A 12TH: In three of his four NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch has finished 12th. However, he has encountered much better luck in NASCAR's other two major circuits, scoring a Craftsman Truck Series win in October 2005 and a Busch Series pole position earlier this season.

'KYLE BUSCH DAY': Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers of Avondale, Ariz., proclaimed it "Kyle Busch Day" in the city on Tuesday. With Busch in attendance, the mayor made the proclamation as part of a special ceremony at Avondale City Hall.

TRIFECTA TIMES TWO: Busch will enter all three of NASCAR's premier series -- NEXTEL Cup, Busch and Craftsman Truck -- at the upcoming race weekends at Texas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway.

CHASSIS 388 FOR ATLANTA: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 388 as the primary option for Sunday's NEXTEL Cup race at Atlanta. This car ran well at both Michigan International Speedway events this season.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET: (ON HALLOWEEN.) "I was a doctor one year, a football player and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle a few times. Maybe this year I'll go as Tony the Tiger."

BUSCH: (ON FINISHING 12TH THREE TIMES AT ATLANTA.) "It's a tough race track for us. For some reason we can run well at the beginning and through the middle of the race, but when the pace picks up and everyone else gets going, we stabilize. We've got to find something there that we've been missing."

BUSCH: (ON HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS' INTERMEDIATE TRACK PROGRAM.) "The chassis has a lot to do with it and the engineering influence has become a big part of the improvement. We've been working a lot on front- and rear-end geometry and it's been working in our favor with our on-track results. The Evernham teams had things figured out at the beginning of the year and it's kind of evened out as of late. All four Hendrick Motorsports teams have picked up the pace on the mile-and-a-half tracks lately. It's been good to see and we all learn from each other."

BUSCH: (IS ATLANTA TOO FAST?) "No, not now. It's pretty fast in the beginning of a run on new tires, but after the first few laps the pace falls off more than two seconds over a tire run. It's like Darlington. If they repaved that place again you'd see speeds over 200 (mph) and we'd probably be looking at restrictor plates."

BUSCH: (ON QUALIFYING.) "Sometimes there's too much grip on the track at Atlanta when you go out there and qualify at night. I've qualified sixth, 15th and backed one into the fence for a provisional. Qualifying at night doesn't make a lot of sense because we race in the daytime, but it's good for the fans."

BUSCH: (WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU HAPPY WITH REGARD TO THE CHASE?) "A top-five finish in the Chase would be good. It seems like we can't catch a break, but lately neither can anyone else. We've dug ourselves a hole in the last few races and when we do well, everyone does well. When the guys we need to have a mulligan have a mulligan, it seems like something happens that sets us back. We have nothing to hang our heads about, but I would like to finish in the top five."
