Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen - Robby Gordon Notes
Robby Gordon - Jim Beam Watkins Glen Preview
Huntersville, NC (August 10, 2005) – Watkins Glen International is the opportunity that Robby Gordon has been looking forward to all season long. With its road course set up, Gordon and the No. 7 Jim Beam team look to duplicate the success Gordon had in 2003 when he won the race after starting in 14th place. In addition to participating in the Nextel Cup race, Robby will also be driving the No. 55 Red Bull Chevrolet in the NASCAR Busch Series Zippo 200 Saturday.
Pit Stops…
Past Success a Forecast for the Future – This weekend, Robby will apply his vast road course experience to Sunday’s race. The Glen is the second and final road course race of the season for the Nextel Cup drivers. In 2003, Gordon swept road course races at both Watkins Glen and Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Course Configuration – Through a series of reconfigurations and restructuring, The Glen has established itself as one of the premiere road racing facilities in the U.S. In 1992, an addition of the inner Loop increased the course to 2.45 miles and added quality spectator viewing. The track has cemented its distinction as the country’s fastest road course and has been home to a variety of competitions including the Can-Am, Trans-Am, Formula 5000, CART Indy Car Series and Formula One races.
Good $ for a Good Cause – As part of the drink smart® campaign, Robby Gordon Motorsports will donate $10,000 from a $100,000 fund provided by Jim Beam bourbon – the “Official Spirit of Racing” to officials from Ithaca College. The donation will fund the University’s implementation of The Century Council’s Alcohol 101 PlusTM education program and related alcohol-education activities.
Lights, camera, action – Jim Beam has unveiled a public service announcement, featuring Robby Gordon and Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon, about making sensible decisions relating to alcohol consumption. The PSA was produced to raise awareness of Jim Beam’s social responsibility platform, drink smart®.
TV and Radio – This weekend’s race will be broadcast on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2005. Listeners can also find the race live on MRN radio.
Behind the wheel with Robby Gordon…
Based on past successes on road courses, are you looking forward to The Glen as your opportunity to excel again?
“I don’t know what it is about the road courses, but obviously I always circle them on the calendar at the beginning of the year and look at them as one of our best shots to win. We’ve got Jim Beam on the car for Sunday, and it would be unreal to give them a win in their first season in the sport, as well as our first season of competition as a company. We’ve been getting better and better prepared every week, and I think Watkins Glen could be the race we’ve been looking forward to and the start of something big for our team.”
