Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen - Ford Qualifying Quotes
Rain cancelled Saturday's qualifying session (which was three-quarters complete), so the field for Sunday's race will be set by points. Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 Subway/National Guard Taurus, will start third. (Note that 37 of 46 drivers - including all Ford Racing drivers - did make a qualifying attempt before the rain. Mark Martin, driver of the No. 6 Viagra Taurus, had posted the seventh-fastest speed. The Ford Racing drivers' post-qualifying attempt quotes are included; all refer to how each individual car should run during Sunday's race.)
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 Subway/National Guard Taurus (will start 3rd) - WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS, UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES? "Definitely, it's obvious we're going to start better than we were. But we did have a pretty decent qualifying run - I think we were 12th or so, right there. I'm pretty happy with that. I think our race car is pretty decent. I'm glad I got that lap in. We changed a number of things since the first practice we had earlier yesterday. So, it was nice to get that lap in. The car felt really good. But, we're excited about starting up front. I think it's going to be a great race. Maybe we can see what Tony [Stewart] is doing on maybe one or two corners before he gets away from us. Just happy to be up front in the Subway car."
WHAT ABOUT THE NUMBERS TONY STEWART HAS PUT UP THIS WEEKEND? "It's obvious that the 20 team has something figured out that nobody else does, clearly, and it's unfortunate that we can't figure out what they're doing. We're working really hard at it. They're doing something to get their car down on the race track. It's obvious, you can see it on TV. We've been able to watch it for the last few weeks. One thing that makes you wonder what is they weren't real good at Pocono - I mean, they were decent there, but - and that's a race track that you get in the car and the race track makes a big difference. So, we don't know. I don't know that anybody knows what they're doing right now. But, we'll figure it out. They were wondering what we were doing when we won five out of 15, so we're wondering what he's doing."
SONOMA WAS A LONG DAY FOR YOU. DO YOU HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE FOR THIS ROAD-COURSE RACE? "Yeah. We run really well here. I've run a lot better at this race track than I do Sonoma. So, I was really looking forward to coming here. I was outside pole here to Jeff Gordon the first time I came here with a Cup car. We, in fact, have that same chassis here this weekend. Just so many things have changed since then - the tires, the spoiler, the way the cars drive. There was a shock package that we were doing then that is not legal anymore, and that could be one of those things. I mean, it was two- or three-tenths a lap, easy. I got the ar down on the race track. So. We're trying to re-visit some of those things to figure out what we're missing right now. But, we'd definitely rather be here than at Sonoma."
CARL EDWARDS - No. 99 Office Depot Taurus (will start 10th) - "We just keep getting better. This has been a tough race track for me. We came and tested and we weren't very fast and we picked up a second from practice, so I'm really happy. It might be 30th-place qualifying position, but it's my personal best yet, so I'm pretty excited. I think by the end of race, I'll be tons faster than I am right now, still, so just looking forward to a good, long race."
KURT BUSCH - No. 97 Sharpie Taurus (will start 5th) - DO YOU LIKE THESE ROAD COURSES? "I do. It's a nice twist just to blend in two of them a year. If we did more, that would be fine. It's a matter of building a whole unique car to try to do it, and then to be able to go out and drive it without testing 'em, because you don't want to spend too much time testing road courses, taking away from your oval program." YOUR TIME TODAY WAS AN IMPROVEMENT OVER YESTERDAY'S PRACTICE SESSION? CAN YOU COMPARE THE TRACK CONDITIONS FOR THE TWO DAYS? "The track's been real consistent for our group, we've just been off on handling a little bit. We pick up speed each time we go out, and to run in the :12s, that was a good run, that might put us in the top 15. I hope that's what that is, because that will get us a good strategy to play forth tomorrow as far as fuel and tires and where we need to be for track position."
MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (will start 6th) - "I'm comfortable with my race car. We were pretty off the first time out in practice. We made three sessions out and improved the car each time, by the third time I was liking my car pretty good. That's what I expected from our car in qualifying. Obviously, it bodes well for the race."
ELLIOTT SADLER - No. 38 M&M's Taurus (will start 12th) - "We've got to go to the rear of the field tomorrow anyway tomorrow and I just wanted to make a good, smooth lap and do some good shifts - it was my first time on that transmission. And make sure we didn't have to share a pit. The car's got a lot more than that in it and I just wanted to be careful today. You know, I've had a tough couple of weeks and been beat down pretty bad as any driver can be, but I feel like I got the best team in the garage. As bad as I've done here lately, they're behind me 100 percent, and the sponsors have been calling all week, they're behind us. It was a tough day yesterday, so to just get qualified today was a chore, and we did it. No problems today, and we'll have to go race hard tomorrow and see if we can get us some points back."
RICKY RUDD - No. 21 Motorcraft Genuine Parts Taurus (will start 26th) - "Just disappointed. This car we came here with also ran at Sonoma and it ran so good out there. We tried to run the Sonoma set-up yesterday and it wasn't even close, and we made a couple of stabs at it, and then the weather caught us. We're a test behind. I know the car is capable of running, and right now it could be as simple as just we missed the air pressure. But the car just wouldn't get into the race track, it was just up on top of the race track, no side bite, real loose under throttle, so we just didn't have much going for us. The motor ran good, that's a plus. But, it could be as simple as the air pressure. But coming here untested, you can test at VIR, you can test at other tracks, but it really doesn't make a huge difference, you need to test at these race tracks, and I think we're getting beat by it pretty good right now."
DALE JARRETT - No. 88 UPS Taurus (will start 9th) - YOU PICKED UP A LITTLE SPEED OVER YESTERDAY'S PRACTICE. ARE THE TRACK CONDITIONS PRETTY SIMILAR? "Yeah, pretty much the same. You just have to go out - hadn't been on the track to make a lap - and get the most that you can. We'll just have to make some good decisions tomorrow."
GREG BIFFLE - No. 16 Subway/National Guard Taurus (will start 3rd) - DOES A GOOD CAR TODAY MEAN A GOOD CAR TOMORROW? "I think so. It was quite a bit better, I lost some time down there in turn one, and we got up the esses pretty good. I'm pretty happy with that. I think overall we're going to have a decent day, because I think the car was capable of going a little bit faster than it went there. The brakes weren't like I wanted them to be, so we'll just have to wait and see ho they come in in the race. It's all new stuff, so we'll see."
