Track Milestones

  • Jeff Burton won the inaugural NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway, the 1997 Interstate Batteries 500 on April 6, 1997.
  • Jeremy Mayfield won the first timed qualifying and the Bud Pole Award at Texas on April 4, 1998. Qualifying for the inaugural race in 1997 was rained out.

    Mark Martin is the only driver to start the first six NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Texas from a top-10 starting position. He has not posted a top-10 start there since.

    Texas Motor Speedway had two first-time winners in the first four NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races held there: Jeff Burton posted his career-first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup victory in the inaugural Interstate Batteries 500 in 1997 and Dale Earnhardt Jr., won his career-first race in the 2000 DirecTV 500.

    Manufacturer Update
    Ford has won six of the nine races at Texas. Chevrolet posted back-to-back victories in 1999 and 2000 for their two wins there and Dodge won the race there in 2003.

    Texas Motor Speedway is just one of the four tracks that Ryan Newman has not posted top-10 starts in more than half of his races: Daytona (1 of 8); Pocono (4 of 8); Sonoma (0 of 4) and Texas (2 of 4).

    Texas Tidbit
    Texas natives Terry and Bobby Labonte were the only drivers that finished in the top 10 in each of the first four NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Texas Motor Speedway. Both finished outside the top 10 in 2001. Terry returned to the top 10, finishing 10th in 2002 and is one of only two drivers with five top-10s at Texas Motor Speedway.

    Winning Tougher than Ever in 2005
    After 33 races in 2005, there are still three drivers who won in 2004 that have not won in 2005: Elliott Sadler, Rusty Wallace and Joe Nemechek. Wallace is the only driver ranked in the top 10 that has not won a race but is also the only driver among the top-50 without a DNF this season.

    Tony Stewart finished ninth in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and remained first in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings. He remains at the top of the point standings for the 12th time in the last 13 races, falling to fifth after Dover. He has scored 16 top-five and 23 top-10 finishes this season, both the most of all drivers. Stewart has scored four top-five finishes in the seven races in the Chase, tied with Mark Martin and Matt Kenseth for the most. His worst Chase finish of 25th came at Lowe's Motor Speedway. He has earned 45 bonus points during the Chase, which is 15 more than any other Chase driver. That, along with his five top-10 finishes, give him a 43-point lead over second-place Jimmie Johnson. Stewart ranked sixth in the point standings after 33 races one year ago. He has competed in seven races at Texas Motor Speedway, scoring four top-10 finishes. He has scored top-10 finishes in five of the seven races in the Chase for the 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. His worst Chase finish of 31st came at Talladega Superspeedway. Johnson led the point standings after 17 of the 33 races this season, but has ranked first only once during the Chase, after Dover. He has scored four victories in 2005 (Las Vegas, both races at Charlotte and second Dover). He has scored 20 top-10 finishes in 2005, three less than Tony Stewart. Johnson ranked second in the point standings after 33 races one year ago. He has scored five victories in 2005, tied with Tony Stewart for the most of all drivers. He has scored 19 top-10 finishes in 33 races this season. Biffle has ranked in the top five after 30 of the 33 races in 2005. Biffle is making his first appearance in the Chase. He now trails first-place Tony Stewart by 75 points after the seventh of 10 races in the 2005 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. He has scored four top-10 finishes in the first seven races in the Chase. His worst Chase finish of 27th came at Talladega Superspeedway. Biffle has competed in three races at Texas Motor Speedway scoring one top-10 finish, a victory there this past April.     Fourth
    Carl Edwards won the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and climbed from fifth to fourth in the point standings. Edwards has scored 19 top-15 finishes in 33 races in 2005, including 15 top-10 finishes. Edwards has scored five top-10 finishes in seven races in the Chase for the 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and trails first-place Tony Stewart by 107 points. His worst Chase finish of 26th came at Martinsville. He finished 19th at Texas in April in his only race at the 1.5-mile superspeedway. Edward's 19.0 finishing average at Texas ranks seventh among the Chase drivers.

    Fifth
    Ryan Newman finished 23rd in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He dropped from third to fifth in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings, and along with Carl Edwards, is 107 points behind first-place Tony Stewart. Despite having the same championship points as fourth-place Edwards (5,993), Edwards gets the fourth-place position because he has more victories. Newman is one of five drivers that have scored five top-10 finishes in the seven races of the 2005 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. His worst Chase finish of 23rd occurred twice (Kansas and Atlanta). Newman ranked seventh in the point standings after 33 races one year ago. He has scored 15 top-10 finishes in 33 races this season. Newman has competed in four races at Texas Motor Speedway scoring one top-10 finish, a victory there in 2003. He finished 16th at Texas in April. Newman's 24.0 average finish at Texas is 10th among the Chase drivers.

    Sixth
    Mark Martin finished third in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and climbed from seventh to sixth in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings, now 143 points behind point leader Tony Stewart. He has scored five top-10 finishes in the first seven races in the 2005 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. He has posted 17 top-10 finishes in 2005. Martin ranked fourth in the point standings after 33 races one year ago. He has competed in all nine races at Texas Motor Speedway, scoring one victory and four top-10 finishes. His Texas victory came in the April 1998. He finished 20th at Texas this past April. Martin has a 15.333 average finish at Texas Motor Speedway, which ranks fifth among the Chase drivers.

    Seventh
    Matt Kenseth finished fifth in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and climbed from ninth to seventh in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings. He trails first-place Tony Stewart by 155 points – one less than can be made up in a single race. Kenseth has scored four top-five finishes in the first seven races in the 2005 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, tied with Mark Martin and Tony Stewart for the most. Kenseth ranked ninth in the point standings after 33 races one year ago. Kenseth has scored 20 top-15 finishes including 15 top-10 finishes in 2005. Kenseth has competed in six races at Texas Motor Speedway scoring one victory (April 2002) and two top-10 finishes. He finished 18th at Texas this past April. Kenseth has a 15.333 average finish at Texas Motor Speedway, fourth among the Chase drivers.

    Eighth
    Rusty Wallace finished 37th in the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and dropped from sixth to eighth in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings. He trails first-place Tony Stewart by 257 points, more than can be made up in a single race. He has scored 24 top-15 finishes in 33 races this season. He is making his first appearance in the Chase.
