RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE CHEVY ROCK & ROLL 400 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2005.
KYLE BUSCH IN THE No. 5 KELLOGG’S/DELPHI CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE.
Notes:
Busch finished fourth, his seventh top-five and 10th top-10 finish in 32-career NEXTEL Cup starts.
Busch is the only Raybestos® Rookie to score a top-five finish this season. He won at California, placed second at Las Vegas and Dover (Del.) and finished fourth at Richmond (Va.) and Pocono (Pa.).
This is the second time this season Busch has posted back-to-back top-five finishes.
Busch was also the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race in the Chevy American Revolution 400 at Richmond this past May (race number 11). He is the only Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five on a short track race this season.

Travis Kvapil led once for one lap, the first time he has led since he paced the field for 23 laps in the Coca-Cola 600 (race number 12). This is the first time 29-career Cup starts that Kvapil has led a lap on a short track and the third race he has led this season. Prior to tonight, Greg Biffle was the most recent Raybestos® Rookie to lead a lap in the September race at Richmond. Biffle led the 2003 race once for two laps.
Raybestos® Rookies that have led a lap in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 (since 1975):
1979: Earnhardt (twice for 19 laps)

Busch led the race twice for a total of nine laps. This is the seventh race Busch has led this season and second consecutive.
KYLE BUSCH: “It was a good effort by the team, they did an awesome job today, good pit stops and kept us in contention again. That car right there [Kurt Busch] was the best all night. He’s been the best here about four times. I mean he’s been bad fast. Finally he prevailed tonight because he didn’t have any bad luck. Before he’s run out of gas, had a flat tire or this or that. He had a really strong car but the guys on the Delphi Chevrolet did an awesome job all night long and we just kind of snuck in there and did what we kind of needed to do and that was just kind of keep our nose clean and keep all four fenders on it and kind of ride around there for 400 laps.” YOU WERE RACING MATT KENSETH AND GREG BIFFLE HARD FOR SECOND PLACE AT THE END. “I was just trying to do the best I could trying to get by him. I wasn’t quite able to do it but that’s all right. I didn’t want to rough up the 16 at all. I know he’s already in the Chase. I could have dumped him and it wouldn’t have mattered [smiles] but that’s not my style. I want to pass them clean if I can. I got loose under him one time but was able to keep it away from him. It was a good effort by the team.” THIS IS ANOTHER STRONG TOP-FIVE FOR YOU AT RICHMOND. “It was a good strong run for us. The guys did a good job of keeping me in contention all night long. We were just able to prevail there and finish fourth. We weren’t quite able to get a first or second. I knew we weren’t going to get a win. The 97 was pretty strong all night long so it was good to be able to come out with a top-five.” WHAT WAS IT LIKE RACING KURT EARLIER IN THE RACE? “It was fun. I went three wide there on that restart to try to get some laps led and got those and then Kurt came up to me a little bit later and passed me. I knew he was really, really fast. I just wanted to make sure that we didn’t damage either one of our runs and screw up anything else that we had going for us.” COMMENT ON THE INTENSITY OF THE RACE. “For me, it was pretty calm. I didn’t pay any attention to that other stuff. We’re building ourselves for next year. We’re making a practice run at the Chase if you will to try to get ourselves ready for next year.” WHAT DID YOU NEED TO HAVE HAPPEN FOR YOU TO WIN? “We just needed more grip. All weekend long I could never find the grip that I would need to get faster out there. Alan [Gustafson, crew chief] made some awesome calls on pit road to make the thing better and get it turning. That last run we got it loose in the beginning part of that run or I probably would have had a shot to pass Greg or Matt. Still, we were able to prevail and come out of here with a clean, solid fourth-place effort.” YOU SAID THIS WAS PRACTICE FOR NEXT SEASON. DO YOU LIKE YOUR PROGRESS? “Progress is going well. A couple of weeks ago, it was right after Bristol and before California, I sat down with my guys and said 'This is going to be our practice run. We’ve got 12 to go and we want to practice there and get ourselves based and get ready for next year and what we’ve got for all these guys.’ They’re definitely championship caliber, being in the top-10 and we need to make sure that we’re that way as well so we can get it next year.” IS THERE A SPECIFIC AREA WHERE YOU NEED TO IMPROVE? “Not really. I’m sure myself I can get a little bit better, of course. The team is doing good. We need better pit stops. We can knock off 13.9s and 14.1s every time but that’s just not going to get the deal done. We need 12.9s and 13. 1s so we need to pick up a second somehow in the pits.” IS THAT JUST A MATTER OF THE CREW STAYING TOGETHER? “It probably is or it’s probably worth making changes. We just need to get through the rest of this year and see how they do in order to see what kind of progress we need to make through the off season to get them rolling.” WOULD YOU BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU DIDN’T WIN A POLE OR RACE OVER THESE LAST 10 RACES? “Probably. I think we’ve got a good effort and a good enough team in order to do so. I’m looking forward to Charlotte and winning my race [smiles]. I don’t know about Charlotte for the pole. Ryan Newman is awfully fast everywhere we go. It’s just a matter of trying to run up front everywhere and get ourselves capable of doing it.”
ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, No. 5 KELLOGG’S/DEPHI CHEVROLET: “That’s a solid run. We’re pleased with that. I think the worst we were all night was seventh, where we started. I think we had the second-best car and that last pit stop just didn’t get out in front of the 17 and 16. Kyle did a great job. He drove his heart out there at the end and gave Biffle all he could handle. I was real proud of the guys. It was a real solid day.” WAS THE RACE AS WILD AS YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE? “It started out fun. It was easy. It’s so nice to be up front. You don’t see any of it, you don’t get in any of it, you don’t have any problems. You’re up there racing with real good cars and real good drivers. We were lucky to be up there and not in the back in a lot of that turmoil.” YOU HAVE STATED THAT THIS STRETCH IS RACES IS PRACTICE FOR NEXT YEAR. ARE YOU HAPPY WITH WHERE THE TEAM IS? “Yes. We’re going to look at this last 10 as we’re in it and we’re going to race like we’re in it and we’re going to see where we end up, where our weaknesses are and see where our strengths are and just try to get everything better. We wanted to be there [in the Chase] this year. We know that we’re building. We didn’t make it and we’re going to continue to work on it until we get it there.” IS THERE AN AREA THAT YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON? “I think in general you need to focus on getting rid of the 30th place finishes, the DNFs. If we can get rid of our DNFs, the 30th and worst finishes, we’d be right there and probably in the Chase. If you look at it a little closer, we struggled mostly on super speedways. We hadn’t finished on of those yet or if we have we’ve been several laps down and we struggled a little bit on the road courses and making smarter decisions. Bristol got us a couple of times this year. We just need to beef up those tracks and realize that we might not be able to win them but we need to at least get top-20s out of them.” YOU HAVE A GOOD STRETCH OF RACES COMING UP. YOU RAN WELL AT LOUDON AND DOVER. CAN YOU WIN A RACE OR POLE? “I think so. I think we can get another win and that’s really what we’re focusing on, getting the consistency from here on out and getting a win or two and letting these guys know that we’re here for real. We got to earn a little respect so when we get there next year they’ll give it to us.”
TRAVIS KVAPIL, No. 77 KODAK/JASPER ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS DODGE (FINISHED 11TH)): “I think we learned a whole lot for next week at Loudon. We kind of took Rusty’s Loudon setup and applied it here. I’m looking forward to that. We just did a good job. We came with a game plan from what we learned in the spring race. We knew we were really tight at nighttime and we had to be looser in the daytime practice and that’s what we had here. We stuck to our game plan and it paid off for us tonight.” YOU HAD A GOOD FINISH. “That’s a great finish for us. Obviously, we’d like to do a little bit better, but after the year we’ve had, some of the poor runs that we’ve bad recently, it was good to keep it in one piece and stay on the lead lap. We run with some fast cars. We lost the balance of the racecar there for a little bit. We had to fight back and make the right adjustments and once we did we were able to start clawing our way back to the front. I wised the race was a little bit longer because we were starting to come on again.” WHAT HAPPENED WITH JOE NEMECHEK UNDER CAUTION? “I feel terrible. When you are the lucky dog, you’ve really got to pay attention when you are passing guys on the right and you’ve got to be aware. I was scrubbing my tires and he came by and we kind of made a body slam contact. I hate it for him because it probably messed his car up a little bit. Fortunately it didn’t hurt my car at all. It was just a mistake. My spotter didn’t tell me anything about it and I guess I should have been paying a little bit better attention, too. Those things happen and I’ll make sure they know it wasn’t on purpose. It’s part of racing, I guess.” ANY CLOSE CALLS? “There were a few of them. At the end there it started getting pretty crazy. The 37 car, he was a lap down and the 42 and some of those guys were racing really hard to try to get by him and they ended up wrecking each other. We just had to weave our way through there a little bit. For the most part, we stayed out of trouble and got a good finish.” IS THIS A
GOOD OMEN FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE? “I think so. We actually came here with more of a 2 car setup from what he ran at Loudon and applied it here. We think what we’re going to go to Loudon with next week is going to be a lot better than what we had there last time. I think we hit on something that kind of worked for us and hopefully we can apply it to a couple different racetracks as well.” HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS RUN WITH THE SEASON THAT YOU’VE HAD? “The team has always been good on pit road. We’ve had a few really good runs here and there but for the most part it’s been a struggle. Obviously, Kodak wants us to run good, Penske wants us to run good; we’ve got two other cars in the Chase. We need to finish the year out strong like this, have some respectable runs and we were able to do that. The rest of the cars that we have built for the rest of the year are strong. We should be able to finish the year out just like we did tonight.”
MIKE GARVEY, No. 66 EAS FORD: “This is better. I think we actually had a pretty decent car. We worked on it and worked on it and got it pretty good at times. That’s what we’ve got to do, just try to make it stronger every week in the race. I feel like we actually made some headway this week so that’s a good thing. The EAS Ford wasn’t too bad. We’ve just got to keep making gains. I really feel the last couple of weeks we’ve got it better. We got the car more consistent, more capable of running with the pack and passing cars. And that’s what we’ve got to keep doing, just keep making gains and we’ll be alright by the end of the year. Hopefully we can run good at Loudon. We’ll bring the same car, make a few adjustments on it and, like I said, try to build from this run and next week get a little better yet.”
