Chevy Rock & Roll 400 - Ryan Newman Notes

Ryan Newman/Richmond Advance

Notes:

  • Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, will make his eighth Richmond International Raceway start and his 142nd in the NASCAR Cup Series this Saturday.
  • In his seven previous RIR starts, Newman has posted four top-five and five top-10 finishes, including a victory in September 2003. Newman possesses an average finish of 10.86 at RIR.
  • Last September, while fighting to make the inaugural "Chase for the Championship", Newman fell a lap down when a caution occurred during green-flag pit stops. The team never recovered the lost lap, but finished 20th and made the chase by 15 points.
  • Newman has led in all but one of his RIR starts for a total of 354 laps.
  • Newman has been running at the finish in all seven of his RIR starts.
  • In seven qualifying attempts, Newman has posted six top-five starting positions. He earned his first RIR pole in this race one year ago. Newman's average start of 3.86 leads all active drivers.
  • Newman and the Alltel team completed their "best test session of the 2005 season" at RIR last Wednesday.
  • Matt Borland, crew chief of the No. 12 Alltel Dodge, is taking chassis PRS-91 to Richmond International Raceway this weekend. PRS-91 finished third at RIR in May. The chassis also was tested at RIR last week.
  • Ryan Newman will participate in the Nextel Wake-Up Call this Friday morning in the RIR infield media center. Newman will begin one-on-one interviews at 10:30 with a group Q&A session immediately following at 10:45 a.m., EDT.
  • With only one race remaining until the "Chase for the Championship", Newman and the Alltel team find themselves outside of the top 10 for the first time in 17 weeks. Newman is 11th in the standings, only one point behind 10th-place Jamie McMurray.
  • Newman has earned 21 top-10 starts this season, the most of all drivers.
  • The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 will air live on TNT at 7 p.m., EDT, on Saturday, Sept. 10, and can be heard on MRN Radio.

    Quotes:
Newman on Richmond International Raceway: "Well, there's never a lack of action at Richmond, that's for sure. This track always provides for intense side-by-side racing, and with it being the cut-off race, it makes it even more crazy. The Alltel team has, historically, run really well at Richmond. This spring we unloaded fast, but unfortunately, killed our primary car in practice. The back-up was still pretty good and we finished third with it. That's the same car we're running this weekend. We tested there last week in it and the entire Alltel team left very happy."

Newman on the point standings: "There's no doubt about it that we've got our hands full this weekend. We absolutely did not want to leave California outside of the top 10, but that's the hand we've been dealt. Now, we'll just do our best to win this Saturday night. Hopefully, we can pull a Jeremy Mayfield on all of them, winning the race and securing us a spot in the chase. Last year was a nail-biter and it looks like this year will be, too."
