Pocono 500 - Scott Wimmer Notes

Scott Wimmer No. 22 CAT Racing Event Preview

Track: Pocono Raceway (2.5-mile triangle) in Pocono, Pa.
Race: Pocono 500 Date: 06.12.05

NASCAR Nextel Cup points position: 35th (same as last week)

Notes:

  • The No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Charger at Pocono Raceway this weekend is Chassis No. 86. It was run earlier this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where Scott Wimmer and his CAT Racing team took a 28th-starting position and turned it into a top-15 run the majority of the day. They were knocking on the door of the top 10 and running lap times as fast as those of the leader before a late-race mechanical problem on pit road relegated the CAT crew from 12th to 25th, and an eventual 27th-place finish. They also raced the same chassis at Texas in April when the team was forced to call it a day way too early after getting collected in the repercussions from a racing incident on lap 32.
  • “T-time” for the 22 crew … Wimmer and his CAT Racing team will test at Chicagoland Speedway on Monday, June 20, then test at The Milwaukee Mile on Tuesday, June 21.
  • Meet Wimmer at Pocono Raceway … Wimmer will stop by his merchandise trailer on souvenir row just outside Pocono Raceway to meet fans and sign autographs from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. ET Sunday, June 12.
  • Don’t miss any of it … Qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Pocono 500 is scheduled to start at 12:10 p.m. ET Saturday, June 11, and will broadcast LIVE on SPEED (TV), MRN (radio) and XM Radio. The Pocono 500 race is scheduled to start at 1:40 p.m. ET Sunday, June 12, and will broadcast LIVE on Fox (TV), MRN and XM Radio.

    S. Wimmer on racing at Pocono Raceway:
“The CAT Racing team had one of its better runs at Pocono last year. We overcame a lot of problems over the race weekend and still pulled off a pretty good finish. It is, however, going to be quite a bit different racing at Pocono this year, with the new gear rule that doesn’t let us shift. The brakes are going to be a little more important getting down into turn one. I know the motor department here at Bill Davis Racing has been working really hard to get together a power band so we can get off of turn three, too. When you think about it, the new gear rule is going to take a lot of work away from us this weekend. Before, we’ve had to shift two or three times on that race track. Sometimes when I would get in traffic I would depend on gear power to regain momentum, and really utilized the shifting to get off of turn one and three so it’s going to be different. When it comes time to pass, it’s going to be tough.

“On the other hand, I think we’ll see a lot less people falling out of the race, too. In the past, there have been a lot of gearbox problems where drivers were tearing up their transmissions and falling out early, so it will be beneficial in getting more cars to the finish line.

“Racing aside, I look forward to going to Pocono. It reminds me a lot of Wisconsin, where I grew up. When we’re not on the track, it is just a different pace around there than some of the other places where we race. It’s nice to change it up and not be on the go all of the time. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
