Subway Fresh 500 - Scott Wimmer Notes

Scott Wimmer CAT Racing Event Preview
Track: Phoenix International Raceway (1-mile oval) in Avondale, Ariz.
Race: Subway Fresh 500 Date: 04.23.05

NASCAR Nextel Cup points position: 33rd (dropped two positions from last week)

Notes:

  • The No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Charger at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend is Chassis No. 74. It was the No. 23 car in 2003, but has since been rebuilt to comply with the new 2005 rules.
  • One of Wimmer’s favorites … Scott Wimmer likes racing at Phoenix International Raceway, and his stats show it. In four NASCAR Busch Series starts at PIR, Wimmer scored one win in November 2002 (started 18th), and two seventh-place finishes in October 2001 (started 36th) and November 2003 (started seventh). Phoenix was also Wimmer’s second race as the driver of the No. 22 Caterpillar car. He finished ninth in that November 2003 race (started 23rd).
  • Meet Wimmer at PIR … Wimmer will stop by his merchandise trailer on souvenir row just outside of PIR to meet Phoenix-area fans and sign autographs from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. MT Saturday, April 23. He also will visit the PIR Raceway Club that same afternoon from 1:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. MT.
  • Catch it … Qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Subway Fresh 500 is scheduled to start at 6:10 p.m. ET Friday, April 22, and will broadcast LIVE on SPEED (TV), MRN (radio) and XM Radio. The Subway Fresh 500 race is scheduled to start at 7:55 p.m. ET Saturday, April 23, and will broadcast LIVE on FOX (TV), MRN and XM Radio.

    S. Wimmer on heading to Phoenix International Raceway:
“I love going to Phoenix. That place is special to me for a lot of reasons. First of all, I have gone out there to watch racing at Phoenix since I was kid. I had family that lived out there, so we used to go visit the family and take in some really good racing. It’s also special to me because I always ran real good in the Busch car there and got a Busch win out there a few years ago. I also was into my second race of making my Cup debut in the Caterpillar car at PIR and ran real strong, finishing real well just inside the top 10. It also reminds me a lot of a track I used to run back home that had a dog leg in it, so that makes it real fun, and it is probably going to be more fun than usual this weekend because we do get to run under the lights. Normally, it is warm and the car gets real slick, so now it is going to be a whole different set of circumstances. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.”

    S. Wimmer on his team’s performance in the season thus far:
“I have been through bad streaks before, and it is hard to break them because you are trying to keep everyone’s morale up. You look at the things that have happened to us, and you kind of scratch your head. At Bristol, we broke a radiator. That wasn’t our doing. At Martinsville, we got collected on that first lap incident and the main belt was sliced, then we got collected this past weekend at Texas. The problem is it is all different circumstances, and that’s racing. You’ll encounter stuff like this throughout a year, but not usually three weeks in a row. I think we can overcome it. All we need is one strong run to remind us of what we are capable of, so we are going to go out to Phoenix and do just that. We also have a lot of tracks coming up that have been good for us in the past. We have always been pretty strong at Talladega, and then we are going to Darlington where we always run real well, too. We just need to get this first part of the season behind us-mechanical stuff and accidents-shake it off, get a good finish and move forward from there.”
