Advance Auto Parts 500 - Martinsville Speedway
Gordon Fights Back to Win at Martinsville
Jeff Gordon fought his way back from a three-lap deficit, after an early green-flag pit stop, to win the Advance Auto Parts 500 at Martinsville Speedway, scoring his 71st career victory. Gordon was forced to make an impromptu pit stop on lap 47 because of a vibration, the source of the problem was a loose right-front wheel, once he returned to the track, he was three laps in arrears. Gordon made up two of the laps on his own and then later got the benefit of the “lucky dog” to return to the lead lap to battle for the win. Gordon took the lead from Sterling Marlin on lap 465 and held on to win by .593 seconds over Kasey Kahne. This is Gordon’s sixth victory in 25 races at Martinsville, including three of the last five, and gave car owner Rick Hendrick his 12th victory at the Virginia track. After winning the season-opener in Daytona, Gordon now becomes the season’s first repeat winner in six races. The race seemed to belong to Tony Stewart, until his hub broke and his entire wheel came off on lap 432, up to that point he had dominated the race, leading four times for a total of 247 laps. Stewart would end up 26th in the final rundown. Sophomore Kasey Kahne, who started 35th, finished in the second position, his first top-ten effort in three races at Martinsville. Mark Martin crossed the stripe in third place, while teammates Ryan Newman and Rusty Wallace rounded out the top five.
Riggs Edges Rocketman to Score Martinsville Pole
Scott Riggs won the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Bud Pole for the Advance Auto Parts 500, lapping Martinsville Speedway in 19.588 seconds, at an average speed of 96.671 mph. This is Riggs’s first career Bud Pole in 41 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series starts and it is his second top-10 start in three races at Martinsville Speedway. Riggs became the 12th driver to post poles in all three of NASCAR’s major series; he has five poles in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and two in the NASCAR Busch Series. Riggs had to edge the “Rocketman” better known as Ryan Newman for the pole as Newman posted the second-quickest qualifying lap of 19.591 seconds, at an average speed of 96.657 mph, and will join Riggs on the front row for the race. Newman has started from a top-10 starting position in all seven of his races at Martinsville. Jeremy Mayfield will roll off third, while Rusty Wallace scored his 33rd top-10 start in 43 races at Martinsville with a fourth-place qualifying effort.
