Dave Blaney
No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet
Event Preview Fact Sheet
Event/Date: GFS Marketplace 400 – August 21, 2005
Venue: Michigan International Speedway – Brooklyn, Mich.
NOTES:
This Week’s Race Car at Michigan International Speedway … Dave Blaney will pilot chassis No. 131 from the Richard Childress Racing stable. Built new for 2005, this is the same Jack Daniel’s Chevy Blaney raced earlier in the season at Las Vegas (started 29th, finished 13th), Atlanta (started 27th, finished eighth), Texas (started 12th, finished 26th), Charlotte (started 31st, finished 29th) and Chicagoland (started 10th, finished 38th).
Change is Good … Beginning this week at MIS, Scott Miller will take over as crew chief for Blaney and the No. 07 Chevy. Miller moves over to the Jack Daniel’s team after acting as the team manager/engineer for the No. 29 GM Goodwrench team and driver Kevin Harvick. Andy Street will fill Miller’s role with the No. 29 car.
Stats Facts … In 11 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup starts at MIS, Blaney has recorded two top-10 and four top-15 finishes. The 1995 World of Outlaws Champion posted a best qualifying effort of fourth on June 10, 2001 at the two-mile track located in Michigan’s scenic Irish Hills.
Meet the Driver … Blaney will sign autographs at the Jack Daniel’s souvenir trailer Sunday, August 21 from 10:15-10:45 a.m. A limited number of tickets are available and can be obtained at the trailer.
Meet the Driver Part Two … Blaney will also appear at the Jack Daniel’s Experience Sunday, August 21 from 11-11:30 a.m. The Jack Daniel’s Experience will be located outside the speedway’s front straightaway. Autographs will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
Up to Speed … The GFS Marketplace 400 will be televised live Sunday, August 21 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on TNT and broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and XM Satellite Radio. Qualifying for the 23rd of 36 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events will take the green flag at 12:10 p.m. Saturday, August 20 and will be telecast on TNT beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
DAVE BLANEY QUOTES:
Are you looking forward to going back to Michigan?
“I think everyone looks forward to Michigan. Obviously, it’s big, fast and wide. It’s probably also the closest track where we race to where I came from in Ohio - it’s just about a four hour drive. I’ve also run pretty well at Michigan a few times so it’s a place I’ve always enjoyed. There’s so much race track to use that you can try the bottom and, if that doesn’t work, you can try the top or the middle. Typically, you can find some place where your car will run fast.”
There are two races at Michigan – one in June and one in August. Naturally it’s hotter in August but what can you carry over from the June race?
“Both races are pretty close. A lot of times the weather is similar. You just fine-tune what you had in the first race. You can help your engine a little bit by moving the power around or try to help the set-up.”
Fuel mileage always seems to come into play at Michigan, then again, you can have a late race caution and the fuel mileage thing goes out the window. What’s going to be the critical strategic element to get the Jack Daniel’s Chevy in Victory Lane?
“You just have to run good all day. If you don’t run good all day you can’t take advantage of track position, gas mileage or anything like that. You need to do something first. The whole thing we’ll work on is getting the car handling well and getting it fast over that long 50-lap fuel run that we normally see at Michigan. The key every week is getting the car handling good.”
SCOTT MILLER QUOTES:
What are your initial thoughts as you begin your new position?
“It all happened really quick. I think all of us sensed that something was going to change because it wasn’t working out. Who really knows what it is that needs to be changed but something had to give. I don’t think anyone knew exactly what it was going to be but Richard and everyone else in that decision-making process decided it was going to be the crew chief. Because I’ve obviously done it before and being part of the (No.) 29 – granted we all need to be better around here – but the 29 has probably been the best of the lot. So, I think Richard looked to me to bring what we’ve been doing at the 29 to the Jack Daniel’s team and see if we can make it work. I’m very happy to be given the opportunity. I know it’s a good race team and I think Dave can get the job done. I think we’ve got all the right pieces, we just need to rectify a few things to make this team better and more competitive on a weekly basis. I am honored to have been asked to do it and I’m going to do everything I can to try and help. I’m glad Dave wanted me here to do it. That’s the most important thing.”
