UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 - Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Johnson Hits the Jackpot in Vegas
Jimmie Johnson hit the jackpot in Las Vegas, winning the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the $30,000 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Leader Bonus for winning the race and leading the point standings. The win for Johnson is his 15th in 114 career Nextel Cup starts. Johnson dominated on the day, putting an end to Roush Racing’s reign at the track; he led five times for a total of 107 laps, bringing home the bonus points for leading the most laps. This is Johnson’s fifth victory in the past nine races, dating back to last season, Johnson scored top-ten finishes in each of those nine races. Johnson beat rookie and hometown favorite Kyle Busch to the finish line by 1.661 seconds to become the sixth different winner in eight races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For the younger Busch, the runner-up effort was a career-best finish, in only his second race at the Las Vegas track. Busch’s brother, and 2004 Nextel Cup champion, Kurt finished in the third spot. Kurt Busch has now scored a top-ten finish in 12 of the last 13 races. Jeff Gordon ended his day in the fourth position, while Kevin Harvick bounced back from a post-qualifying inspection failure to finish fifth. The event featured a record 10 caution flags for a total of 46 laps and there were 25 lead changes among 12 drivers. Please Note: In post-race inspection, both Johnson's car and Kyle Busch’s failed inspection. Any fines and/or penalties will be handed down early in the week.
Newman Rockets to Las Vegas Pole Position
Once NASCAR returned to a “normal” qualifying weekend, we saw a very familiar face on top of the speed charts. Ryan Newman won the pole position for the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after turning in a fast lap of 31.080 seconds, at an average speed of 173.745 mph. This is Newman’s 28th career Bud Pole in 119 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races and it is his first pole and fourth top-five start in five starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Elliott Sadler posted the second-quickest qualifying lap of 31.086 seconds, at an average of 173.712 mph, and will join Newman on the front row. It is Sadler’s first top-10 start in seven races at Las Vegas and it is his first start of better than 39th this season. Greg Biffle, who won the series last event, will roll off from the third position, while Scott Riggs and the 2004 Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch will start from the top five. Kevin Harvick’s time was disallowed, after failing post-qualifying inspection, he will start 42nd on Sunday.
