Pepsi 400 - Robby Gordon Notes

Robby Gordon Motorsports
No. 7 Fruit of the Loom
Daytona Preview

Race: Saturday, July 2, 2005, Daytona Beach, Florida
TV: NBC 7:00 p.m./EDT

Notes

  • 17th event of the 36-race 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series schedule – Daytona Beach, Fla.
  • ROBBY GORDON has started to regain consistency on race day and also is showing improved results in qualifying, as evidenced by recent time trials at Michigan International Speedway and Infineon Raceway. He qualified eighth and fifth, respectively, on those two tracks for his last two races – marking the first time since the end of the 2002 season that GORDON has qualified in the top 10 on back-to-back weekends.
  • Fruit of the Loom and Chicago-based Wilson Sporting Goods have entered into a licensing agreement whereby the world-renowned apparel company will produce, sell and market a line of Activewear products inspired by and designed for today's athletes. Wilson is one of the highest-rated sporting goods brands among consumers 12-65 years of age. The new Wilson Activewear line will be sold through sports specialty and mid-tier retailers throughout the United States. The Wilson logo is appearing on the No. 7 Chevrolet for the remaining seven races in which Fruit of the Loom is contracted to be GORDON’s primary sponsor this season, including this weekend’s Pepsi 400.
  • Fruit of the Loom’s next scheduled race as the primary sponsor of GORDON’s No. 7 Monte Carlo will be the Allstate 400 on Aug. 7 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The company’s remaining five races will come in September at Fontana, Calif.; in October at Talladega, Ala., and Martinsville, Va.; and November in Justin, Texas, and Avondale, Ariz.
  • GORDON will run chassis No. 101 in the Pepsi 400, marking the first time the car will be raced in a points-paying event this season. He tested it earlier this year at Daytona and had the sixth-fastest speed among 53 drivers in pre-season practice. GORDON then finished seventh in his Daytona 500 qualifying race but narrowly missed earning a spot in the “500” field.

    ROBBY GORDON – DAYTONA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Best start – 3rd (Daytona 500; Feb. 16, 2003)
  • Best finish – 3rd (Hershey’s 300; Feb. 16, 2004)
  • Most winnings – $309,956 (6th place, 2003 Daytona 500)
  • Most laps led – 12 (Winn-Dixie 250 Busch Series race; July 2, 2004)
  • Total laps led – 21 (2 of 14 races)

NOTE: The Pepsi 400 will mark the tour’s return of nighttime racing this season. In his most recent outing under the lights, Robby Gordon challenged for victory in the May 29 Coca-Cola 600 before suspension problems sidelined the No. 7 Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet with a 27th-place finish.
