Mike Bliss will make his 36th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Daytona 500 February 20th.
BLISS ON THE DAYTONA 500."We've spent a lot of time preparing for this season and it's finally here, and we think we're ready. It's always exciting and still a bit scary to make a change like I have this season, - coming from the Busch Series to make another run in NEXTEL Cup - but I feel good about this opportunity. We had a chance to work together for a couple of races last season and we had a pretty good test in Daytona so I feel optimistic about the way things will go when we get there. We tested a brand new car and decided to bring it back for the race. It's a better car in the draft than it is alone, so qualifying may not be our strong suit, but the way things work for the Daytona 500 with the qualifying races on Thursday you obviously want a car that will be as strong as it can be in race trim. Our Hendrick power is second to none and Bootie and the guys have built a solid car for the draft. Our goal isn't to go out there and win the Daytona 500, though I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice, but we want to come out of the box strong this season and be able to put together strong, consistent, solid performances everywhere we go. We're so happy to have NetZero back on board and we hope we can really show Best Buy what we are capable of both on the track and off starting in Daytona and continuing throughout the season."
DAYTONA NOTES OF INTEREST
The Haas CNC Racing team will utilize chassis 008 for the running of the 2005 Daytona 500. This is a brand new car which saw its first track time during testing at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in January. Bliss posted the fastest time of the day on the final day of the first session with this particular car.
After competing in the final two events of the 2004 season (Darlington (S.C.) Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway) with the Haas CNC Racing team, Bliss is back to embark on his first full season in the NetZero Best Buy Racing Chevrolet. Bliss has made a total of 35 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup starts in his career, posting a career-high fourth-place finish in one of two starts he made for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2004.
Though Bliss has only competed in three NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events at DIS, he has plenty of experience at the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Bliss has five Busch Series starts under his belt and earned the pole position in the last race there (July, 2004). Following his front-row start, Bliss finished in the fifth position. Bliss has four Top-10 qualifying runs in the Busch Series to his credit. He has also competed in one NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at the famed speedway. Bliss started in third in 2002 before falling out of the race due to engine trouble.
In the off-season, Bliss and the NetZero Best Buy Racing team tested at DIS, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, California Speedway and Kentucky Speedway in preparation for the 2005 season.
Bliss will sign autographs at the Best Buy store on West International Speedway Blvd. from 5-7 pm Saturday, February 19.
