    Race For The Chase to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup

  • Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle have clinched a spot in the 2005 Chase for the NEXTEL Cup.

This is the fourth straight week that Stewart has sat atop of the point standings. Stewart has scored 10 straight top-10 finishes, including five victories, in his last 10 races. He has scored 11 top-five and 16 top-10 finishes this season, the most of all drivers. He leads second-place Jimmie Johnson by 213 points. Stewart was the first driver to clinch a spot in the 2005 Chase to the NEXTEL Cup. He did so with three races remaining. Stewart ranked fourth in the point standings after 24 races one year ago. He has competed in eight races at California Speedway scoring three top-10 finishes. Stewart has finished outside the top 15 in his last five races there. He finished 18th in this race one year ago and 17th there in February. Stewart has a 17.4 average finish at California Speedway.

    Second
    Jimmie Johnson finished 36th in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway and remained second in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings. It marked his fourth DNF of 2005. He trails point leader Tony Stewart by 591 points and is 30 points behind eighth-place Carl Edwards. He ranked 10th in the point standings after 24 races one year ago.
