Nextel All-Star Challenge - Scott Wimmer Notes
Scott Wimmer CAT Racing Event Preview
Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (1.5-mile quad-oval) in Concord, N.C.
Race: NASCAR Nextel Cup All-Star Challenge Date: 05.21.05
NASCAR Nextel Cup points position: 34th (moved up one position from last week)
Notes:
This weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Charger that will compete in the NASCAR Nextel Cup All-Star Open is Chassis No. 78. Its last outing produced an 11th-place finish (started 28th) at Pocono Raceway in August 2004. Then-rookie Scott Wimmer also scored a 15th-place finish (started 31st) at North Carolina Speedway and a 28th-place finish (started 29th) in the Coca-Cola 600 that same year. The car has since been rebuilt to comply with the new 2005 rules.
Team No. 23 tested and approved … One of Wimmer’s fellow Bill Davis Racing drivers, Mike Skinner, tested the No. 23 BDR Dodge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway May 4.
Many chances to meet Wimmer in Charlotte … CAT Racing fans will have three chances to meet Wimmer during the next two weeks of NASCAR racing in the Charlotte area. The first opportunity will be this Saturday, May 21, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET, when Wimmer will meet fans and sign autographs at his merchandise trailer on souvenir row just outside Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The second opportunity will be next Saturday, May 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET, at the Konica Minolta Speed Street display in Uptown Charlotte. Later that same day, Wimmer will return to his merchandise trailer just outside LMS to meet fans and sign autographs from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET.
Don’t miss the show … Qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup All-Star Open is scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m. ET Friday, May 20, with qualifying for the NASCAR Nextel Cup All-Star Challenge following at 7:10 p.m. ET. Both qualifying sessions will broadcast LIVE on SPEED (TV), MRN (radio) and XM Radio. The All-Star Open race is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday, May 21, and the All-Star Challenge is scheduled to follow, starting at approximately 9 p.m. ET. Both events will broadcast LIVE on FX (TV), MRN and XM Radio. Don’t miss the pre-race festivities on FX, starting at 7 p.m. ET.
S. Wimmer on heading into the NASCAR Nextel Cup All-Star Open:
“Racing in the All-Star Open for the first time last year was a lot of fun. It’s fun for the drivers to have these non-points races and entertaining for the fans as well. I guess you could say it takes some of the heat off of us drivers because we are racing for the money and not so much points. It also gives us a chance to check out the track and our race setup strategies for the Coca-Cola 600, which is a big race for all of us.
“I am just feeling really good going into this weekend too. The CAT Racing team is finally moving in the right direction. Our finishes at Darlington and Richmond have really helped lift morale and kind of reinvigorated all of us, so there is definitely a lot more momentum carrying us into the next two weeks than we’ve had for a while. It’s always nice to race so close to home, too. I think all of us look forward to these two weeks of racing because it’s nice to get to spend so much time at home. I have a lot of friends coming down from Wisconsin to visit, so I am looking forward to just getting to hang out with some of my hometown boys and hanging out around the house.”
