KYLE BUSCH IN THE No. 5 KELLOGG’S CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT ATLANTA. He finished 12th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the 22nd time in 33 races.
More Notes:
Busch led the race once for four laps. He was the only Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in today’s race. Busch has led 18 times in nine races this season for 299 laps.
Busch was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the Golden Corral Buffet & Grill 500 (race No. 4) at Atlanta in March, claiming a 12th-place finish. He finished on the lead lap after starting 42nd.
BUSCH: “It wasn’t what we deserved. We penalized by NASCAR once again. I got run out in the grass so I held my position and they called me for passing [on pit road] so I’m pretty disappointed in that. We had a strong enough car where we probably could have been in the top-five. We just got mired back in traffic. It’s terrible to try to pass out there. It’s definitely a good racetrack and good racing, but it was hard to pass. You could pass a bunch of guys in the beginning but then you use all your stuff up and they come right back at you.” AND YOU CAN’T TAKE TWO TIRES ON A PIT STOP TO GAIN TRACK POSITION. “Yeah, you can’t get any track position here. It’s just one of those tough deals where you’ve got to put up with it and go on.” THIS IS THE SISTER CAR TO THE ONE YOU HAD AT CHARLOTTE. ARE YOU PLEASED WITH IT? COULD WE SEE IT NEXT WEEK AT TEXAS? “We’re not going to see this one at Texas. We’ve got another one for Texas. This one is probably done for the year. We’ve got a Texas car and a Homestead car so we’re pretty much set for the rest of the year.” YOU MUST BE LOOKING FORWARD TO TEXAS BECAUSE YOU WERE ABLE TO TEST OUT THERE. “Yeah, it will be okay for us. It’s not going to be excellent.
It’s not one of my favorite racetracks. I’ve had a lot of trouble there so I’m looking forward to going there, hopefully getting a top-10.”
TRAVIS KVAPIL, No. 77 JASPER ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS/KODAK DODGE: “We were just tight, tight. We were battling tight all day long. We made quite a few adjustments that seem to help it a little bit but never really got it very close. I thought we’d be a little bit better than that for sure. I’m just disappointed. We’re not really sure where we missed it. We just never could really get a handle on it and the long runs just never could get it. We just lost so much time every time on them long runs. I’m pretty disappointed.” ONCE YOU GET BEHIND ON TRACK POSITION, IT’S HARD TO MAKE IT UP HERE. “You have to have a pretty good racecar but fortunately if you have a good racecar and you lose track position this is the racetrack where you can make passes and you can also go to the front. I guess if you’re bad, you’re going to be bad and if you’re good, you can kind of make your way up through there.” YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEST AT TEXAS. “Testing didn’t go very good. We were hoping we could learn some things this weekend that we could apply there, but we’re going to have to start with a clean sheet of paper. We’re going to have to really rely on our teammate Rusty. He ran pretty good there in the spring race. I have to take a close look at what he’s got and try and go from there.”
ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, No. 5 KELLOGG’S CHEVROLET: “It’s okay, but I’m disappointed. I think we had a car early on in that race that could contend to win. We led that race and came in and had a little bit of a pit stop problem and went to sixth. We kind of worked our way back up there and had a real good pit stop rolling out and I never saw what happened to the 16 on tape. I don’t see where we’re at fault for that but we went to the back and knocked the fender in and I think when we went to the back we didn’t keep up with the racetrack. The car got away from us a little bit and we ended up 12th. You kind of judge your day on how you were and I think we finished worse than we were. Those are never good days but at least it was only a 12th.” WAS THE PENALTY FOR PASSING ON PIT ROAD? “They just told me you’ve got to slow down. I guess I need to get with them. I guess the deal is that pit stall 20 you just pull out. I think you’re going to cause more damage by doing that than you are going into the grass but I guess you’re supposed to stop. We’ll just pick pit stall 20 and hop out in front of them.” IT SEEMS HARD TO PLAY CATCH-UP HERE BECAUSE YOU CAN’T CHANGE TWO TIRES ON A PIT STOP FOR TRACK POSITION. “It is. We can’t use that for an excuse because the 17 and the 6 came back from it and I think the 16 did, too. We should have been better, but it is tough and especially with the lucky dog rule you get cautions and guys that get lapped early in the race are back on the lead lap. And then when you should have been starting about 15th, you’re starting 25th. It makes it hard but that’s the way it is. We’ve got to be good enough to overcome it.” ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO TEXAS? “I’m looking forward to Texas. I was looking forward to here. I thought we had a shot at winning this race and we did, we just didn’t capitalize and got into some situations. We tested at Texas and tested well. I think we can go there and have a shot to win.”
