Ward Burton will make his 330th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green
flag drops for the Aaron's 499 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
BURTON ON TALLADEGA... Our NetZero Chevrolet was pretty decent in Daytona and
we're bringing it back to Talladega, so we know what we've got to work with
and we know we have good horsepower from our Hendrick Engines. We messed up
in Daytona and missed a lug nut and had to take an extra trip down pit road,
which is why we didn't have a better finish there. Everybody says it, and
it's true; all you can do at these restrictor plate races is hang on, hope
you can miss the big one and hope that every one of your competitors is on
his game that day. We know how the cars responded to the new aero rules in
Daytona and it will be interesting to see what happens in Talladega. The key
is to make sure you are around at the end and in a position to contend for
the win and then pick the right people to go with. It's a crapshoot, no doubt
about it. You have to rely a lot on your spotter and crew chief to feed you
the information you need to make the right decisions on the track. You also
have to be open minded about making new friends for the day, about running with people you wouldn't necessarily run
with at other tracks. You may need a buddy during green flag pit stops to
make sure you have someone to draft with at all times. You never know who
that might be, so you'd better be nice to everyone Sunday morning."
TALLADEGA NOTES OF INTEREST
The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis 008 at Talladega
(Ala.) Superspeedway this weekend. This is the same car the team ran at
Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February in its way to a 17th-place
finish.
Ward Burton has made 17 starts on the 2.66 mile Alabama track. Burton has
five Top-10 finishes at the track and posted a seventh-place finish in this
event last year.
Burton has qualified inside the Top 10 twice.
Following their 22nd-place finish last week at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway,
Burton and the NetZero Racing team picked up three spots in the NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup point standings and now hold down the 19th spot. Burton and the team
remain only 192 points outside of the Top 10 and 356 points behind leader
Kurt Busch.
Burton will spend this Wednesday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway filming his
second commercial for NetZero before heading to Talladega.
