Samsung/Radio Shack 500 - Ward Burton Notes

Ward Burton will make his 328th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Samsung/Radio Shack 500

BURTON ON TEXAS…”I think the one thing everyone always thinks when they think about racing at Texas is how fast the track is. You have to have everything working for you when you get to Texas. It’s a nightmare for the engine guys; it always seems like there are more engine problems there than anywhere else. You want to get the most out of the engine, but here, almost more than anywhere else, you need to find that fine line between not enough and too much.

“It’s tough to pass at Texas, but it isn’t impossible. Usually the second groove comes in and then you have a couple of opportunities around the track to take advantage of it. You need to be able to get off the corners well so you have a lot of momentum heading into the straightaways. Like I said, you have to have everything working for you, which is why Texas is always such a challenging place to go. Of course, all of the tracks we race on are challenging in their own special ways, but if you haven’t got your stuff figured out come raceday at TMS, it’s going to be a long, long day. The NetZero Racing team had a long day last week in Bristol and we don’t want to have to go through anything like that again this week. This race in Texas is important to us; we need to get back on track. We’re a better team than what we showed last week.”

TEXAS NOTES OF INTEREST

  • The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis No. 016 this weekend in Texas. This is the same chassis the team utilized last season during the event in Kansas as well as the fall races in Michigan and Atlanta. The team has also run this car once this year at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where Burton finished 13th.
  • Ward Burton has made 7 starts on the 1.5-mile Fort Worth, Texas track. Burton has finished inside the Top 21 on six occasions and also has four Top-15 finishes to his credit.
  • Burton has three Top-10 qualifying efforts at Texas Motor Speedway.
  • Following last week’s event in Bristol, Burton and the NetZero Racing team hold down the 20th spot in the NASCAR NEXTEL point standings, only 80 points out of the Top 10. Though the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series will take a weekend off following the event at Texas Motor Speedway, the No. 0 NetZero Racing team spend will spend one day next week testing. The team is scheduled to test at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Thursday, April 8
