LABONTE SEEKING FOURTH RIR WIN:
Heading into this weekend's Chevy Rock & Roll 400, Terry Labonte's three victories at Richmond International Raceway are more than any other driver in Hendrick Motorsports history. Jeff Gordon has two wins, while Joe Nemechek and Tim Richmond each recorded one.
RICHMOND STIRS MEMORIES FOR LABONTE:
The second weekend of September marks the anniversary of a pair of RIR highlights for Labonte. His first start there was Sept. 10, 1978, when he qualified 13th and finished seventh in the Capital City 400. It was on Sept. 10, 1994, that Labonte dominated the Miller Genuine Draft 400, leading 237 laps en route to his 12th career victory.
SECOND TIME AROUND:
This weekend marks the sixth of 13 return trips to tracks that host two NEXTEL Cup races in 2004. In three of the five previous return visits, Labonte's finishing position was higher than his first race there. He placed 18th in this year's initial stop in Richmond on May 15.
LABONTE AT RIR:
In 52 career starts at Richmond, Labonte has three wins and 24 other top-10 finishes, including an eighth-place showing in last fall's 400-lapper. His victories came in 1994, 1995 and 1998. Labonte also has two poles on the three-quarter-mile State Fairgrounds oval, most recently in 2003, and will surpass the $1.5 million mark in career winnings at RIR with this weekend's event.
PROVISIONALLY SPEAKING:
Labonte has now gone 40 consecutive races without the use of a car owner's provisional to access the starting field. The last time he failed to qualify for a race based on speed was the 2003 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Labonte is one of only six full-time drivers who have made the field based on their qualifying speed in every race since last year's Brickyard 400 -- the others being Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart.
'5' CAR AT RIR:
The chassis entered by Labonte's Kellogg's Racing team for this weekend's Chevy Rock & Roll 400 has been run in just one race during the 2004 season, qualifying 11th and finishing 16th seven weeks ago at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H.
TERRY LABONTE, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLETS: (ON THE "CHASE FOR THE NASCAR NEXTEL CUP.") "This is the last chance for drivers to get into the 10-race run for the championship and, with six or seven teams fighting for just two or three spots, it's going to make the race at Richmond even more exciting than it usually is. Even though the No. 5 team won't be in that mix, Richmond is one of my favorite tracks and we're focused on winning a race over these final two months of the season."
