Chevy American Revolution 400 - Robby Gordon Notes
Robby Gordon
Event Preview Fact Sheet
Event/Date: Chevy American Revolution 400/May 15, 2004
Venue: Richmond (Va.) International Raceway
NASCAR Cup Points Position: 19th (gained three positions in California)
NOTES:
This Week’s Race Car at Richmond International Raceway (chassis No. 105) helped Gordon and Team Cingular have a strong month of racing this past March, including a season-best, fourth-place finish in Darlington and top-20 runs in Atlanta (finished 17th) and Bristol (finished 19th).
Testing makes perfect … Gordon and the No. 31 Cingular Wireless team are testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Tues., May 11, to prepare for the upcoming two weekends of racing at the Concord, N.C. track.
Triple Duty … This weekend, Gordon is scheduled to compete in three different racing events starting with the NASCAR Busch Series Funai 250 Friday night, May 14. Following the race, he will fly up to Indianapolis, Ind., where he will qualify his No. 70 Meijer Dallara Chevrolet Saturday morning for the upcoming Indy 500 Memorial Day weekend. Then, Gordon will return to RIR to drive the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet in Saturday night’s NASCAR Cup Chevy American Revolution 400.
Triple kick-off … To further discuss his “Triple Duty” this upcoming weekend and his quickly approaching “Double Duty” Memorial Day weekend, Gordon will visit the Richmond International Raceway media center from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Fri., May 14, for a group Q&A session and one-on-one interviews.
Make it two-in-a-row … The No. 31 Cingular Wireless pit crew made an encore performance at California Speedway by claiming top honors on pit road, winning the McDonald’s/Powerade pit crew challenge. The No. 31 RCR team also won the challenge the weekend before in Talladega and earlier this year in Atlanta.
Busch time … Gordon will be competing in the Funai 250 Busch Series event Fri., May 14, at RIR. Gordon will be driving the No. 55 Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet for Robby Gordon Motorsports. Gordon currently sits fifth, just 93 points out of first in the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series points.
Indy 500 Practice update … Robby Gordon used Sunday's opening day of practice for the May 30 Indianapolis 500 for minimal set-up laps on both his primary and backup Meijer/Coca-Cola Dallara-Chevrolets. In just six laps, late in the afternoon, Gordon went 215.317 mph in his primary car. Earlier, he
did a 209.733 mph speed in 11 laps in the backup Meijer entry. – M. Knight, Meijer/R. Gordon PR

TEAM CINGULAR QUOTES:
Robby Gordon on upcoming weekend of racing:
“This weekend is going to be busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The way I look at it, I will be spending most of it in a race car and that is one of my favorite places to be.”
“I am having some great runs here lately in my Cup and Busch cars, and my off-road trucks are testing well. Last but not least, so far my Indy car is looking really good, too. Hopefully the great runs will continue and result in some great victories very soon. Winning is always nice, but multiple wins would be even sweeter.”
Chris Andrews, Cingular Wireless Crew Chief:
“Robby really has on his game face right now, as well as the rest of the guys on the Cingular Wireless team. We are returning to the place where we experienced some of the greatest, as well as not-so-great moments last year. Last May, Team Cingular rebounded from being three laps down to finish fourth. Hopefully, we will not have to make up those laps again this year, but still be able to finish even better than that. We thought we were going to have a repeat performance at Richmond last fall, but a late-race accident robbed us of that.”
“Both the 29 and 30 teams tested at Richmond and the feedback has been positive. Richmond has always provided a stage for some great racing. Drivers can pass well there without tearing up their race cars in the process. Robby proved that repeatedly last year. The new surface is said to provide a much smoother ride and there is more grip. Overall, they said it is still the same ole Richmond, minus a few bumps, and that’s good news to Robby and me.”
