Junior Shines at Night in Richmond
Dale Earnhardt Jr. shone brightly under the lights at Richmond International Raceway, winning the Chevy American Revolution 400 on Saturday night. Earnhardt outran Jimmie Johnson by 1.481 seconds to take the checkered flag for the second time in his career at Richmond. Earnhardt led the most laps on the night, staying at the front of the field for 115 of the race’s 400 laps, to capture his third win of the 2004 season and his 12th career Nextel Cup win. Johnson crossed the finish line in the runner-up position, while teammates Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart rounded out a Chevrolet sweep of the top-four finishing positions. The 2003 series champion Matt Kenseth finished fifth in a Ford. Earnhardt increased his lead atop the championship standings to 40 points over second-place Johnson and 62 points over Jeff Gordon in third place.
The race featured 19 lead changes among 12 drivers and 9 caution flags for 66 laps.
Vickers Wins First Cup Pole Position
For the second time in as many days, a Richmond International Raceway track record fell, this time it was obliterated. Rookie Brian Vickers, along with 28 other drivers, eclipsed the previous track record set in 2002 by Ward Burton. Vickers’ qualifying lap was clocked in 20.772 seconds, at an average speed of 129.983 mph, to give him the pole position for the Chevy American Revolution 400 on Saturday evening. Vickers earns his first career Nextel Cup pole in his 16th series start. Ryan Newman will start from the second spot on the starting grid, followed by Jeff Green and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in row two.
