Siemens 300 - New Hampshire International Speedway
Busch Wins in Loudon
The Siemens 300 was basically two races within a race, with pole-sitter Ryan Newman winning part one and Kurt Busch winning part two. Busch took the lead for the final time on lap 233 and held on to win the Siemens 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway, solidifying his position in the top ten in the points chase as the 26-race “regular season” is nearing a close. Busch outran Jeff Gordon by .607 seconds to score his 10th career Nextel Cup victory and second of the season. Busch’s last win came at Bristol Motor Speedway in March, ironically a race in which Newman also started from the pole. The race featured only three leaders on the day with Newman leading the most laps, pacing the field twice for a total of 187 laps. Busch would also lead twice for 110 laps. With the win, Busch jumped three positions up to sixth place in the point standings. With an 11th-place run, points leader Jimmie Johnson padded his lead over second-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. to 165 points. Earnhardt handed over the wheel of his Chevrolet to Martin Truex Jr. on lap 61, in which Truex finished 31st in his Cup debut.
Newman Wins Loudon Pole
Ryan Newman won the pole position for the Siemens 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Newman qualified in 28.776 seconds, at an average speed of 132.360 mph, to score his 22nd career pole in 99 Nextel Cup races. Newman, who led the series in poles last season, has not won a pole since Bristol on March 26, 2004 - 13 races ago. The top starting spot is Newman’s third pole in five races at New Hampshire and his third straight in the last three qualifying sessions at Loudon. Jimmie Johnson had the second-fastest time with a qualifying lap of
28.858 seconds, at 131.984 mph, and will join Newman on the front row.
Martin Truex Jr., subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr., posted the third fastest time in his first ever Cup qualifying attempt.
