Subway 400 - North Carolina Speedway
Kenseth Nips Kahne at Rockingham
Wow. Matt Kenseth, the defending series champion, beat Kasey Kahne, a series rookie, by a nose in the Subway 400 at the North Carolina Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Kenseth crossed the finish line a mere .01 seconds ahead of Kahne, marking one of the closest finishes in series history. Kenseth had the dominant car for most of the day, leading a total of 259 of the races 393 laps, but had to fight to hold off the rookie at the end. The win is the ninth of Kenseth’s career, while Kahne’s second-place finish comes in only his second Nextel Cup start. Sophomore Jamie McMurray brought his Dodge home in third, followed by Sterling Marlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the top five. Earnhardt holds the spot atop the Nextel Cup point standings, with Kenseth seven points behind.
Newman Wins Pole Position at The Rock
The Rocket Man strikes again. Ryan Newman will start the Subway 400 at North Carolina Speedway from a familiar spot, the pole. Newman earned his 19th career pole position with a qualifying lap of 23.398 seconds, at an average speed of 156.475 mph. Newman, who led the series last season with 11 poles, now has a total of three pole positions at “The Rock.” Newman led a Dodge sweep of the top four starting spots, with Jamie McMurray taking the second position and Kasey Kahne and Rusty Wallace starting from row two. Jeff Gordon will start fifth in a Chevrolet.
