GFS Marketplace 400 - Michigan International Speedway
Biffle "Flashes" to Win at MIS
With Justice League superhero The Flash adorning the hood of his Ford, Greg Biffle was his own version of The Flash on Sunday afternoon in the Irish Hills of Michigan. Biffle won the GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway, scoring his second career Nextel Cup victory in his 65th career start. Biffle’s last victory came at Daytona in July of 2003, 42 races ago. The Flash gained the power of super-speed during a freak electrochemical accident making him the fastest man alive, which made him the perfect hero for Biffle’s car at Michigan. Biffle had by far the fastest car on the day, leading six times for a total of 73 laps, including the final 18, to lead the most laps for the first time in his career. Biffle and The Flash outran teammate Mark Martin and Batman to the checkered flag by a whopping margin of 8.216 seconds to become the 11th different race winner in 2004. Martin battled back from a questionable penalty on pit road to score the runner-up finish, moving him 33 points from the final transfer spot into the Chase for the Championship. Dale Jarrett crossed the finish line in the third position, while Jamie McMurray and rookie Kasey Kahne rounded out the top five. Carl Edwards finished 10th in his first career Nextel Cup start.
More Rain Gives Johnson Second Straight Pole
For the second consecutive week, the weather set the field for a Nextel Cup event. Qualifying for the GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan was rained out and the starting lineup was set in accordance to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series rulebook. The rain at MIS gives point leader Jimmie Johnson his second straight rain-out pole position, his third pole of the season. Johnson’s teammate Jeff Gordon will join him on the front row, starting from the outside pole, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart start from row two.
