MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
DHL 400 - Race Preview
Stoddard on Michigan International Speedway…
“Michigan a lot of times comes down to fuel mileage,” said Frank Stoddard. “It’s a real fun race track. There are three to four grooves. If you can get your car handling well, you don’t have t worry as much about the aero because there are three to four grooves to run in. Scott has run three races there, so we didn’t use a test to go there. He’s been very quick to get the tracks figured out. He runs behind different people and watches their lines, and finds out which one works best for him and where he can get the most speed. I think we’ll be just fine this weekend. We’re certainly continuing to build our team. We’ve shown a tremendous amount of improvement in how we’ve been running. We went to Pocono and ran real competitive and Scott had never even raced there. I’m pumped up about this weekend.”
The Caterpillar team runs in the top 10 for most of race at Pocono before wreck ends day…
For Wimmer’s first trip to the three-turned track, he looked like no rookie. Wimmer had found himself in the top-10 outrunning several teams before being caught up in oil that was on the track left behind by Bobby Labonte’s car. He spun and got hit by Sterling Marlin and the team’s day was over. “We were very happy with the way we ran last weekend,” said Wimmer. “After a handful of laps, I really settled in and felt comfortable with the track and felt like I had figured out the weird configuration. I know I am looking forward to getting back around to some of these tracks for the second time.”
Cat equipment for the DHL 400…
Wimmer and the No. 22 Caterpillar team are taking car #82. It’s the same car that the team competed with at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (started 29th and finished 28th) after a wedge bolt backed out of the left rear spring allowing the car to lose wedge and make the handling become extremely loose. The team found the problem with the car in the post-race tear down procedure at the shop following the race weekend. The team felt fortunate that Wimmer was able to hang on to the #22 and finish the race without spinning out.
Scott Wimmer news…
Wimmer returned to Wisconsin to sign autographs at Marshfield (WI) Superspeedway this week. Wimmer raced at the ½-mile asphalt oval before progressing to NASCAR’s top divisions.
Wimmer will compete in the Slinger Nationals, a Late Model Stock race at Slinger (WI) Super Speedway on Tuesday, July 13. He will compete against reigning NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Champion, Matt Kenseth and fellow rookie candidate Johnny Sauter.
And his return to his homeland doesn’t stop there; Wimmer will also compete in his late uncle’s race – the 24th Annual Larry Detjens Memorial Race at State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI on Thursday, July 15.
Wimmer will be competing in these races with the same Late Model Stock car that he built back in 1995 that has tallied over 25 feature wins throughout Wisconsin.
