Ward Burton will make his 324th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green
flag drops for the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Sunday.
BURTON ON LAS VEGAS... "There are so many variables this year going to Las
Vegas. This is the least amount of aero we've ever had and a softer tire as
well. Just because you're good the first 10 laps of the run doesn't mean
you'll be good the whole run and that's what it's going to take to get a good
finish at that track. The key to having a good day in Vegas will be getting
the car to be good the entire run. We went down there before the season
started and had a pretty good test, but we decided not to bring the same car
back for the race. It's important to get a good qualifying run in here too,
and this NetZero Chevrolet that Tony Furr and the guys have prepared has
typically been a great qualifier, so we'll see what we have when we get down
there."
AND ON 9th PLACE IN THE POINTS RACE... "It's been a long time - certainly longer
than what I would have liked - since I've been in the Top-10 in points and it
feels good to be here. Obviously, it's much to early in the season to be
thinking of stuff like that, though with the new points system maybe it's
never too early to start. At the same time, it means we've started off the
season strong and that means a lot to everybody involved with this team. We
need to stay focused and take it one race at a time. Still, being in the
Top-10 is much better than the alternative."
NOTES OF INTEREST
The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis No. 012 this weekend
in Las Vegas. Though the team tested in Las Vegas in January, this is not the
same car they brought to the test (the test car will be used as a backup).
This particular car was run several times as a Pontiac last year and has
qualified exceptionally well. It was run during the first event at Lowe's
(Concord, N.C.) Motor Speedway when Jack Sprague qualified fifth, and also
saw action during the second event at Michigan International Speedway where
Jason Leffler started in the sixth spot.
In 6 starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Burton has posted one runner up
finish (1999) and led 71 laps along the way. Burton's highest qualifying
effort came in the inaugural event when he started on the inside of the
second row.
The NetZero Racing pit crew will also continue to lend a helping hand to
the Haas CNC Racing Busch Series team this weekend. The majority of the crew
will pit teammate Jason Leffler's Busch Series car for the first several
races of the 2004 season.
