UAW-GM Quality 500 - Ryan Newman Notes

Notes:

  • Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge, will make his eighth start at Lowe's Motor Speedway this Saturday in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. In his seven previous starts, Newman has earned three poles, two top-five and three top-10 finishes.
  • Newman finished second in the 2003 UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. After starting on the pole, Newman led 46 laps before finishing second.
  • Newman has qualified in the top-four for all seven of his starts at Lowe's Motor Speedway. He possesses an average start of 2.43, leading all active drivers.
  • Newman swept both 2003 Bud Poles at LMS.
  • Newman earned his first career NASCAR Cup Series Bud Pole, in only his third attempt, at LMS in May, 2001.
  • Newman has led three races at LMS for a total of 106 laps.
  • Crew chief Matt Borland and the ALLTEL team will take chassis No. 79 to LMS this weekend. The ALLTEL team spent Monday testing PRS-79 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The test session was used for Saturday's race in Charlotte as well as the upcoming AMS race.
  • Newman's average starting position this season of 8.57 leads all drivers. He is the only driver with an average finish of ninth of better.
  • Newman leads all drivers with 20 top-10 starts this season.
  • In the final 10 races of the 2003 season, Newman scored eight top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
  • The No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge team fell from seventh to eight in the NNCS point standings following its 33rd-place finish at Kansas Speedway. Newman is currently 232 points behind the standings leader, Kurt Busch, and 52 points behind seventh-place Matt Kenseth.
  • The UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway will air live on NBC at 7 p.m. EDT. MRN Radio will also cover the event, starting at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

    Newman on LMS: "We tested for this race Monday in Atlanta and the session went really well. We struggled here in May. That's something that we don't want to go through again. Testing for this race was a must for us.

    "We seem to have qualifying down at Charlotte. We just need to work on our finishes there. We've been close a couple of times, so maybe it's just around the corner. Hopefully we'll get it Saturday night.

    "Last weekend definitely hurt us in the title hunt, but the ALLTEL team is not giving up. Again, winning is the main objective. So, we'll go to these last six races with that being the main goal."
