Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Ryan Newman Notes

Ryan Newman/Infineon Advance

Notes:

  • Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge, will make his third career start at Infineon Raceway this Sunday in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Newman has earned two top-10 finishes in his previous two appearances at the road course.
  • Newman has posted four top-10 finishes in all four of his career road course starts, including Infineon and Watkins Glen.
  • Crew chief Matt Borland and the ALLTEL team will take chassis No. 64 to Infineon this weekend. PRS-64 was most recently raced at Watkins Glen International in August of 2003, where Newman flipped the car during a practice session. The team recovered, made repairs and finished ninth in the race.

  • Ryan Newman and crew chief Matt Borland will make an appearance at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Ariz. on Monday, June 28. While there, both Newman and Borland will be special guests of the base and will participate in an hour long ride in an Air Force jet. This will be the first time either Newman or Borland have been in a fighter jet. The visit is open to the media.
  • Ryan Newman will hold an open Q&A session with the media at 2:20 p.m., PT on Friday at the rear of the ALLTEL transporter.
  • Ryan Newman currently leads all active drivers with a 6.47 average starting position in 2004. He also leads all active drivers with 11 top-10 starts this season.
  • The No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge team sits ninth in the NNCS point standings. The team was 17th at this point in the season one year ago.
  • The Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway way will air live on FOX at 4 p.m. EDT. MRN Radio also will cover the event, starting at 3:15 p.m. EDT.

    Quotes:
Newman on Infineon: "I guess I'm one of the minority because I really like road course racing. Myself and the ALLTEL team have experienced a good amount of success at road courses. I honestly wish there were more of them on the schedule. I look forward to this time in the season because this is typically when the ALLTEL team's performance picks up. From Michigan to Infineon to Chicago, I'm looking for good things to happen in the next couple of weeks.

"We, as a team, treat road course races like every other race. They offer the same amount of points, so they're just as important to us. We have scored a top-10 finish in every road course race we've been in. That's our goal again, only a win would be even better of course.

"Our win at Michigan was huge for this team. We hadn't gotten to the point that we were discouraged at all, but we definitely enjoyed the morale boost. We got the idea of not winning off of our backs last weekend. Now we can just keep pushing for more.
