Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Infineon Raceway
Jeff Gordon Still King of the Road
Jeff Gordon showed the world that he is still “King of the Road.” Gordon utterly dominated the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, scoring his fourth career win on the Sonoma road course. Gordon has now won a total of eight career road-course events, extending his all-time NASCAR record. Gordon led all but 18 laps on the day, and might have led them all had it not been for green-flag pit stops. Gordon led three times for a total of 92 of the race’s 110 laps, setting a record for the most laps led by a race winner at Infineon Raceway. Gordon notched his third victory of the season and the 67th of his career, winning by 1.032 seconds over Jamie McMurray in second place. It was the third time in his career that Gordon has won from the pole position at Infineon. Chip Ganassi Racing teammates finished back-to-back, with Scott Pruett crossing the finish line in third place behind McMurray. Michael Waltrip and points leader Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top five in the finishing order.
Gordon Scores Fourth Sonoma Pole Position
Jeff Gordon, the reigning king of NASCAR’s road courses with seven wins, put himself in a familiar position on the twists and turns of Infineon Raceway, at the front of the field. Gordon won his second consecutive pole position with a qualifying lap of 1:15.968 seconds, at an average speed of 94.303 mph, breaking the Infineon track record set last season by road-course specialist Boris Said. For Gordon, the top starting spot is his third of the 2004 season and the fourth of his career at the nearly 2-mile, 10-turn road course. Rusty Wallace will start from the outside pole position, qualifying in the second spot, while Roush Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Mark Martin roll off from row two.
