Brickyard 400 - Ward Burton Notes

Ward Burton will make his 343rd NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

BURTON ON INDY…”Everybody looks forward to getting to Indianapolis. The history and tradition associated with this track is unbelievable. You want to go out and be able to win every week, but every team and every driver puts a little bit more emphasis on this race. Getting your name in the record books at this track is quite an accomplishment. NASCAR doesn’t necessarily have its roots here like the open wheel cars do and a lot of our best drivers never had the chance to race there, but when people think of great racing, they think of Daytona and Indy. The masses of people that show up here to be a part of the excitement of the weekend are just amazing. We’re hoping we can put together a race like we had last week, but with a better result. It would be big to run well here and I think we’re on the right track to do that now. I’m looking forward to the results that we think we can accomplish with this NetZero race team for the rest of the season. We’re working really hard to make sure we’ve got a good future and we’re making changes to some of our equipment that should really benefit us in the long run. We’re going make sure we are using all of the resources available to us to make sure this NetZero racing team is the best that it can be. It would be nice to have a good run at Indianapolis, but we’re looking for consistency as well. We need to be able to have solid runs at every track we go to, so it’s important for us to look at the big picture too.”

INDY NOTES OF INTEREST

  • The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis 016 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. This is the same car that was run in Texas and Atlanta earlier this season.
  • Ward Burton has made 10 starts on the 2-mile Indianapolis track. Burton has posted two Top-10 finishes at the track during his career and has started as high as fourth (2003).
  • The NetZero Racing team dropped one spot in the NASCAR NEXTEL point standings following the event at Pocono Raceway. After a disappointing 31st-place finish due to transmissions problems, the team now stands in 27th place.
  • Burton will participate in an 11 a.m. (CT) Action Performance press conference on Friday at IMS.
  • Burton will have a teammate this weekend in Indy. Jason Leffler, who drives the Haas CNC Racing entry in the Busch Series, will attempt to make his first NEXTEL Cup race of the season.
  • Burton and the NetZero Racing team tested at Virginia International Raceway Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming road course event at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.
