Ford 400 - Robby Gordon Notes

Robby Gordon
No. 31 Team Cingular Event Preview

Race/Date: Ford 400/Nov. 21, 2004
Location: Homestead-Miami Speedway – Homestead, Fla.

NASCAR Cup Points Position: 23rd (same as last week)

NOTES:

  • This week’s No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet at Homestead is Chassis No. 106. It has been run in six other races this year. The best run was at California Speedway in September, when Gordon posted a ninth-place, career-best finish on the Fontana track (started 35th). He also had good runs with the same car at Phoenix earlier this month and at Indy in August. At Phoenix, Gordon ran toward the front of the field the majority of the day, but fell out early due to engine problems. He also was well on his way to a top-five finish at Indy when a cut tire relegated him to 22nd (started 20th). The other 2004 runs include: Kansas (started 23rd, finished 28th), Texas (started 18th, finished 23rd) and Michigan in July (started 19th, finished 25th).
  • Back to Baja … After back-to-back weeks of practice and preparation, Gordon headed west Monday to run in the 37th Annual Tecate/SCORE Baja 1000. Gordon left North Carolina on Monday to go to California, then departed from California on Tuesday to head down to the desert in Baja California, Mexico. The race will start 10 a.m. PST Thursday, Nov. 18. Last month, Gordon drew to start eighth in the legendary race. He plans to run the majority of the event, the first 750 miles, but will have to hand over the wheel to Steve Barlow so he can head to Homestead, Fla., to compete in the final NASCAR Cup and Busch Series races of the season. Gordon will take on the rugged terrain with his long-time navigator, Greg Till. Gordon, Till and Barlow will be racing in the No. 31 Red Bull Trophy Truck, which will be powered by a RCR engine. Gordon’s father, Bob Gordon, also is going to be on standby to drive the truck, if needed. Gordon plans to be on a plane no later than 10 p.m. PST Thursday, so he can be in Homestead on Friday morning in time for practice and qualifying.
  • Gordon’s Baja History 101 … Gordon competed in the 2003 Baja 1000, but fell short on his quest for a third Baja 1000 victory when mechanical problems forced him to drop out of the competition. The 35-year-old racer is a legend in Baja after several SCORE championships and successful runs in the Baja 1000. He won the race in a solo drive in 1989 and in 1987 as a co-driver with his father, Bob Gordon. The younger Gordon also scored a third-place finish in 2002, a fifth-place finish in the 1999 race and nearly won the grueling race in a late charge in 1997 before finishing in the runner-up spot. Additionally, he won four of the seven events in the 1996 SCORE Trophy Truck Series en route to the series championship, including a third-place finish in the Baja 1000. Gordon also won five consecutive SCORE/HDRA Heavy Metal Off-Road championships between 1986 and 1990.

  • Top of the chart in CART … Gordon has one top-five CART finish at Homestead. It came in March 1996, when he finished third after starting seventh.
  • Back to Busch racing … Gordon will be competing as a driver and team owner in the NASCAR Busch Series Ford 300 Saturday, Nov. 20, behind the wheel of the No. 55 Robby Gordon Motorsports Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet. While Gordon is running the Baja 1000, Brandon Miller, who was recently signed by RCR to co-drive the No. 21 Reese’s Chevrolet in the NASCAR Bush Series with Kevin Harvick, will practice and qualify Gordon’s No. 55 Chevrolet on Thursday at Homestead.
  • Last chance this year … The Ford 400 NASCAR Cup race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. EST Sunday, Nov. 21, and will broadcast LIVE on NBC, MRN and XM Radio. Qualifying for the Ford 400 is scheduled to start at 1:35 p.m. EST Friday, Nov. 19, and will broadcast LIVE on SPEED, MRN and XM Radio.

    R. Gordon on racing at Homestead-Miami Speedway: “Last year, the renovations definitely made a difference at Homestead. The increased banking made the track way faster and pretty fun to race. A major bonus on RCR’s side this year as we head to Homestead is having Jeff Burton on board. He has an average finish of seventh place there and he also tested there last week, so his feedback is going to be beneficial for all of us.

“Other than some mechanical problems toward the end, we had a good run there last year. I have qualified 39th both times I’ve raced there in a stock car, so I plan to do way better than that the third time around. However, I do remember it didn’t take me long to move up from 39th, too. I know we spent a good amount of time inside the top 10 down there last November and we’ve had some great runs lately, but have also had quite a few last-minute mishaps that always derail us from having a good finish.”

    R. Gordon on racing in the 37th Annual Tecate/SCORE Baja 1000: “I have been down to Baja twice to do some pre-running and it is looking good so far. We’ve run pretty flawless. We did system check the race truck, which I am glad we did because we found a little problem that we were able to fix so it won’t be a problem come race time. Altogether, we have probably put in about 1,500 miles of pre-running. We put a few hundred miles on the truck last Monday after Phoenix. I am excited because, if history serves me well, I should have a pretty good run this year. I built a new Chevrolet K1500 last year and it will be one-year-old this year. That seems to be the time my old truck came to life so hopefully this one will do the same. I can tell a difference in it already. I also will have RCR engine power on board and I am very pleased with that, as well. In addition to engine power, my man power will involve at least 60 people, but probably more. I will have 12 support vehicles and one helicopter.

“I will only actually run around 750 miles of the 1,000-mile race, if everything goes good. If we have any problems, I will probably only run 500 miles of the race. It’s almost like the Indy/Coca-Cola Double, because I do have a timeline to meet. It’s all going to depend on our running condition and the clock as to when I get out of the truck and on the plane to head to Florida. Basically, we are going to run a three-people race that is usually a two-people race. My dad will be on standby, in case I do have to get out earlier than expected so I can head to Loreto to meet my timeline to get on down to Homestead. Brandon Miller will practice and qualify the No. 55 Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet Thursday, but it is my plan to be at the track on time Friday to practice both cars and qualify the No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet. The way it is going to work out for me in Baja is I should be in the air by 9 or 10 p.m. PST Thursday night. That will put me in Florida on Friday morning by 5 or 6 a.m. EST. That will give me time to sleep on the plane, then get into Homestead and sleep a couple of hours before practice later that morning.

    R. Gordon on the recent announcement regarding NASCAR’s post-qualifying impound procedures in 2005: "I think this is good news for the NASCAR series. The obvious benefit to teams is the ability to save money on tires, but there are other savings as well, including extended hotel stays for a lot of guys and the fact that eliminating several practice sessions will give the guys on the road a break. Most people don't understand how hard the crews work when they're on the road. They're in the garage by 6 a.m. and work until dark. While it will save the teams money, it will also save us time, and that isn't something you can put a price tag on. It will allow us to work on race setups instead of a lot of time and money on just two laps. I applaud NASCAR for taking this step to help the teams."
