Ford 400 - Chase Notes

The Chase for the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
With one race remaining in the Chase for the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, 404 points separate first to 10th. The Chase began with a 45-point separation between first and 10th at Race No. 27 at New Hampshire. The biggest point margin is 139 points between seventh-place Ryan Newman and eighth-place Matt Kenseth.

  • The top-five drivers are separated by just 82 points. This is the closest points race with one race remaining since the point system was established in 1975. The previous record was set in 1992 when six drivers were separated by 113 points with one race remaining. That season Davey Allison had a 30-point lead over second-place Alan Kulwicki. Bill Elliott was –40, Harry Gant –97, Kyle Petty –98 and Mark Martin was –113.
  • Only twice in NASCAR history has the point leader been overtaken in the final race of the season. It happened in 1979 when Richard Petty overtook Darrell Waltrip and again in 1992 when Alan Kulwicki passed Davey Allison.
  • The biggest point margin that a driver has overcome to win the Championship with one race remaining was a 30-point lead held by Davey Allison over Alan Kulwicki in 1992. Kulwicki won by 10 points over Bill Elliott in the closest points race in NASCAR history.
  • Jimmie Johnson ranked ninth in the point standings with six races remaining (after Race No. 30 at Kansas). Johnson was 247 points behind and is now second, 18 points behind, with one race remaining. The greatest come-back with six races remaining occurred in 1992. Alan Kulwicki came from fourth in points (278 behind) to win the 1992 Championship by 10 over Bill Elliott.
  • With one race remaining in the Chase for the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, 404 points separate first to 10th.
