Ward Burton will make his 326th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400.
BURTON ON DARLINGTON."Any racing at Darlington is always great racing. I guess they've put these SAFER walls up now, which is great, but it will definitely change things. The good news is everybody is in the same boat as far as trying to figure things out. The bad news is we only have two hours of practice to do it before we qualify. It may be just a matter of adjusting the way you drive into the corners, but it's not like we left a lot of room up there to begin with. I'm sure we'll be OK come race time, but it will be interesting to see what happens during that first practice.
"Darlington has been a good track for me over the years and I enjoy going there. It's a tough track with a lot of history and it means a lot to be successful at tracks like that. This NetZero Racing team is really working hard this year and we can see that we have the major ingredients of what it takes to be successful. For this team last year there were a lot of questions, and hopefully we've answered some of them with the start we've had so far. There are things that need to be worked on, of course, but everybody has done a good job getting us to the point where we know they are more or less minor things, just like everybody else."
DARLINGTON NOTES OF INTEREST
The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis No. 001 this weekend at Darlington. This car was run as a Pontiac several times last season including in the fall event at Martinsville Speedway.
Ward Burton has made 20 starts on the 1.366-mile Darlington, South Carolina track. Burton has finished inside the Top 20 on 12 occasions and has four Top-Five finishes to his credit including two victories (spring 2000, fall 2001). Darlington Raceway is the only track at which Burton has won twice.
Burton has also qualified inside the Top 20 12 times, including one pole position (of seven career poles) in the spring of 1996.
Burton and the NetZero Racing team stand in 14th in the NASCAR NEXTEL point standings, only 10 points shy of the top 10 and have scored two Top-15 finishes this season. The team has already made quite a turnaround from 2003 when it finished in the Top-15 just twice the entire season.
