Daytona 500 - Daytona International Speedway
Earnhardt Jr. Wins First 500
In only his fifth attempt, Dale Earnhardt Jr. captured his first Daytona 500 victory. With 20 laps remaining, Earnhardt dipped under leader Tony Stewart and pulled off the pass, without any drafting help, to take the lead for the final time. Stewart was unable to mount a serious challenge the rest of the way and finished in the second position. Earnhardt’s victory comes exactly six years to the day when his father was able to claim his first triumph in the “Great American Race.” The victory marks the tenth career Nextel Cup win for Earnhardt and extends the DEI dominance at restrictor-plate tracks. A Dale Earnhardt Inc. car has now won ten of the last 13 events ran at Daytona and Talladega. Stewart led the most laps on the day, pacing the field for 97 of the event’s 200 laps, while Earnhardt stayed out front for 59 laps. Rookie Scott Wimmer brought his car home in the third position, followed by Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson in the top five.

Biffle Grabs Daytona 500 Pole Position
The last time Greg Biffle was in Daytona, he surprised many by winning the Pepsi 400. This time, Biffle was surprising once again, grabbing the pole position for “The Great American Race,” the Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway. Biffle qualified in 47.774 seconds, at an average speed of 188.387 mph, to earn his first career Nextel Cup pole position, earning him a spot in next season’s Budweiser Shootout. Biffle edged out the Ford of Elliott Sadler by a mere .008 seconds to capture the top spot. Sadler qualified in the second spot and will start the Daytona 500 from the outside pole. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ricky Rudd, and Dale Jarrett rounded out the top-five qualifying drivers. Only Biffle and Sadler’s starting spots are locked in, the remainder of the field will be set following Thursday’s Gatorade 125s.
