Ward Burton will make his 340th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start when the green flag drops for the Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland (Joliet, Ill.) Speedway.
BURTON ON CHICAGOLAND…”I couldn’t be happier to be thinking about Chicago after the weekend we had in Daytona. That’s one good thing about the NASCAR schedule; you don’t have time to worry about what happened to you during the last race, you’re too busy getting ready for the next one. The NetZero Chevrolet that we are taking to Chicago is one of our favorites. We ran it in Michigan and Fontana and we qualified really well with it in both places and it ran well too. You need to run well in Chicago because there are a bunch of races on the schedule in the last half of the season that are mile and a half tracks a lot like this one. If you don’t have your mile and a half program working right now, you could be in trouble. We’ve had a lot of trouble lately - a lot of bad luck - and we need to get back on track. 25th in points isn’t where this team should be. We’re better than that and NetZero and all of our sponsors deserve better. The guys on our team work too hard to be satisfied with 25th. We may not make it into the Top 10 on points, but there is still a lot on the line and we can’t give up. There are too many things at stake still.”
CHICAGOLAND NOTES OF INTEREST
The Haas CNC Racing team has opted to utilize chassis 006 at Chicagoland (Joliet, Ill.) Speedway this weekend. This is the same car the team ran at Michigan International Speedway and California Speedway earlier this season. Burton drove the car to a 10th-place finish in Fontana and qualified in the top-15 on both occasions.
Ward Burton has made 3 starts on the 1.5-mile track and has posted two Top-20 finishes.
Despite a 40th-place finish last weekend in Daytona caused by a problem with the right rear tire early in the event, Burton and the NetZero Racing team remain in 25th place in the NASCAR NEXTEL point standings, 159 points out of the Top 20.
Burton and the NetZero Racing team will spend July 19 and 20 testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the upcoming Brickyard 400. Haas CNC Racing will attempt to qualify two cars for that event with Busch Series driver Jason Leffler behind the wheel of the second entry. Leffler’s team is scheduled to test at the Speedway this Monday and Tuesday.
NetZero will host three families from local area Ronald McDonald Houses at the track on Saturday afternoon. The children, along with their families, will have the opportunity to meet Ward Burton and Busch Series driver Jason Leffler before heading to the grandstands to watch the Busch Series event. NetZero is the official internet provider of 152 U.S.-based Ronald McDonald House programs. The Ronald McDonald House offers a "home away from home" for families of critically ill children being treated at nearby hospitals.
