Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 - Atlanta Motor Speedway
Emotional Win in Atlanta for Johnson
On an eerie Halloween Day in Atlanta, where bad luck spooked a majority of the championship contenders, it seemed only appropriate that a Hendrick Motorsports car would visit victory lane at the end of the day. Today that car would belong to Jimmie Johnson, providing an emotional win for the entire organization. One week ago, a Hendrick Motorsports plane crashed on the way to Martinsville, killing all 10 people aboard, and Johnson’s win was dedicated to the memory of those lost in the tragedy. Mark Martin completely dominated much of the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, leading four times for a total of 227 laps and lapping all but seven cars. But in the end, it was Johnson who took advantage of a late caution to take fresh tires, and eventually the lead, then held off Martin to capture the win. Johnson finished .293 seconds ahead of Martin to win for the third consecutive week. The victory for Johnson is his first in Atlanta, his seventh of the 2004 season and the 13th of his Nextel Cup career. In the last three weeks, Johnson has climbed from ninth to second in the point standings, trailing Kurt Busch by 59 points. Martin would settle for second, his 18th career top-10 finish at Atlanta. Youngster Carl Edwards, in only his 11th Cup series start, would score a career-best third-place effort. Joe Nemechek would come home in fourth, followed by rookie Kasey Kahne in fifth.
Three Straight Poles for the Rocketman
Ryan Newman won the Nextel Cup Bud Pole for Sunday’s Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The Rocketman turned in a qualifying lap of 28.939 seconds, at an average speed of 191.575 mph, to capture his 26th career Bud Pole in 113 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races. The top starting spot is the third consecutive for Newman and his series leading eighth of the 2004 season. It is Newman’s fourth consecutive Bud Pole and his fifth front row start in six races at Atlanta. “Front Row” Joe Nemechek had the second-fastest qualifying time with a lap of 28.978 seconds, at an average speed of 191.318 mph, and will join Newman on the front row. It is his 16th top-10 start in 2004, including four of the past five races. Elliott Sadler will roll off third, followed by Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle in the top five.
