Scott Wimmer on his first start at Atlanta Motor Speedway…
“I always get excited about going to Atlanta,” said Scott Wimmer, driver of the #22 Caterpillar
Dodge. “It has a special place in my heart since it is where I got my first Cup start. I can
remember that day like yesterday and I am glad I am not racing under those circumstances any
more. I remember leading the race and Dale Earnhardt was behind me and I was so nervous. I
kept looking in my mirror and waiting for him to catch me. I just wanted to make sure that when
he did pass me, I didn’t wreck him.”
Scott Wimmer on this weekend’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway…
“We tested down there before we went to Las Vegas and from what we saw we have a little bit of
work to do. We never really got the right combination for speed and handling, but we do feel
better about going there after racing last weekend in Las Vegas. I think we made tremendous
gains from where we started the weekend to where we were after a few laps in the race.
“With my teammate, Dave Blaney, racing down there this weekend too that should really help us
out. When you have close to the same setups and close to the same cars, then you can really
compare information. It makes a huge difference when you have a teammate to talk to about
what your car is doing and how the changes to the setup have affected it. Dave helped us out a lot
during the test in Atlanta and the race last weekend. We’re looking forward to working together
this weekend. Dave has always run really well there.”
Atlanta Motor Speedway Notables…
Wimmer made his first NASCAR Cup start at Atlanta
Motor Speedway on November 19, 2000 after failing to
qualify for the ARCA race that weekend due to qualifying
being rained out. Since the ARCA cars were so similar to
the Cup cars, Bill Davis opted to enter Wimmer in the Cup
race. Wimmer led nine laps before settling into fifth place.
Wimmer remained among the top 10 before running out of
fuel just prior to the conclusion of the race.
Wimmer tested at Atlanta Motor Speedway last week.
