The Winston - Lowe's Motor Speedway
Johnson Wins The Winston
Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag in The Winston, putting the Lowe’s Chevrolet in victory lane at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Johnson passed Jeff Gordon for the lead with 17 laps remaining in the final 20-lap segment and cruised to a relatively easy win in NASCAR’s annual all-star event. This is Johnson’s first victory in The Winston, although he won the first two segments in the event last season. With the win, Johnson pocketed a cool $1,017,604. Tony Stewart won the first 40-lap segment while Kurt Busch won segment number two, which consisted of 30 laps, earning each driver a $50,000 bonus. The final segment consisted of only 12 cars, as opposed to the scheduled 14, after six drivers were eliminated in a late accident at the end of the second segment. Busch placed the only Ford in the top five, finishing second. Bobby Labonte, Joe Nemechek, and Michael Waltrip finished third through fifth as Chevrolet took four of the top-five finishing positions.
Burton Wins Winston Open, Transfers to The Winston
Jeff Burton easily won The Winston Open qualifying race on Saturday night. After finishing third in the first 20-lap segment, Burton pulled away in the final 10-lap segment after a two-tire stop. Burton now earns the 24th and final starting position for The Winston, making his eighth straight appearance in NASCAR’s all-star event. Dave Blaney was runner up, while Mike Skinner, the winner of the first segment, came home third. Brett Bodine and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five.
Elliott, Dodge Squad Win Winston Pole
Bill Elliott and the Dodge Squad earned the pole position for The Winston on Friday night. Under The Winston’s unique qualifying set-up, Elliott completed three laps on the track and hit pit road for a four-tire pit stop in 123.192 seconds to earn his fifth career pole position for NASCAR’s All-Star race. The Dodge Squad, Elliott’s pit crew, had the second-fastest stop on the night, finishing the work in 12.93 seconds. Jeff Gordon’s crew had the fastest stop, as the only two teams to perform a stop in under 13 seconds. Tony Stewart will join Elliott on the front row of the starting grid, starting from the outside pole. Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from row two.
Park Earns Pole for The Winston Open
Steve Park will lead the field for The Winston Open to the green flag on Saturday night, in hopes of qualifying for The Winston. Park won the pole position for the qualifying race in only his first race behind the wheel of the No. 30 Chevrolet. Park qualified in 29.309 seconds, at an average speed of 184.244 mph, to earn the top starting spot. Todd Bodine will start from the second position, followed by Jimmy Spencer and Mike Wallace from the second row. The Winston Open is a qualifying race for those not eligible for The Winston, only the winner of will transfer to the main event.
