EA Sports 500 - Talladega Superspeedway
Waltrip Extends DEI Dominance at Talladega
While Michael Waltrip ended his teammate’s Talladega winning streak at four, he extended DEI’s dominance at the restrictor-plate tracks. Waltrip held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, his second victory of the season. The victory is the fourth of Waltrip’s career and his first win at a track other than Daytona. A driver from Dale Earnhardt Inc. has been to victory lane in nine of the last 12 restrictor-plate races. The DEI teammates put on a spirited sprint to the finish with Waltrip taking the win by .095 seconds over Earnhardt. Earnhardt’s runner-up finish gives him five consecutive top-two efforts at Talladega. Tony Stewart finished third for the second week in a row, while Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five. The race, ran under new NASCAR rules, featured 41 lead changes among 17 drivers.
Sadler on Talladega Pole Position
Elliott Sadler will lead the field to the green flag on Sunday afternoon at Talladega, after capturing the pole position for the EA Sports 500. Sadler’s qualifying lap was clocked at 50.415 seconds, at an average speed of 189.943 mph, to earn his second pole of the 2003 season. Rookie Jamie McMurray will join Sadler on the front row of the starting grid, starting from the outside pole position. Jimmie Johnson will roll of from the third position, while Sterling Marlin will start fourth.
