Aaron's 499 - Talladega Superspeedway
Talladega Four-Peat for Earnhardt
Dale Earnhardt Jr. made history on Sunday afternoon, becoming the first driver to win four straight races at Talladega Superspeedway. Earnhardt started from the rear of the field due to an engine change and received minor damage when “The Big One” happened in the early laps. On lap number five, Ryan Newman’s tire trouble triggered a multi-car accident in turn two that involved 27 cars, eliminating several contenders. Earnhardt led nine times for 34 laps to complete a weekend sweep at Talladega, winning both the Busch and Winston Cup races. Earnhardt won by 0.125 seconds over Kevin Harvick to earn his first win of the season and the tenth victory of his career. Harvick crossed the stripe in second place followed by Elliott Sadler in third. Rick Craven and Terry Labonte rounded out the top five in the finishing order. Earnhardt’s win eclipsed Buddy Baker’s record of three straight wins at the Alabama track.
Mayfield on Pole at Talladega
Jeremy Mayfield won the pole position for the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. Mayfield toured the 2.66-mile tri-oval in 51.349 seconds, at an average speed of 186.488 mph, to score his first pole of the season. For Mayfield, it is his first pole since the 2000 season, the seventh of his career, and his third at Talladega. Kevin Harvick will make out the front row on the starting grid, after qualifying in the second spot. Elliott Sadler with start from the third position while Jeff Gordon starts fourth. Mayfield’s teammate Bill Elliott rounds out the top-five positions in the starting lineup.
Please Note: David Green's sixth-place qualifying run was disqualified after his car failed inspection. Green’s Chevrolet was found to be too low in the rear, disallowing his time and forcing him to miss the race.
