Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Infineon Raceway
Gordon Out Duels Gordon at Sonoma
Robby Gordon won the battle with Jeff Gordon to win the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Robby Gordon outdistanced Jeff Gordon by .533 seconds in the race to the checkered flag to claim his second career Winston Cup win. Robby Gordon led the most laps at the 11-turn Sonoma road course, pacing the field three times for a total of 81 of the race’s 110 laps. Although Robby Gordon is considered a road-racing expert, the win is his first on a road course, his other win came at Loudon, New Hampshire. Kevin Harvick and Bill Elliott battled for third place at the finish line with Harvick taking the spot and Elliott settling for fourth place. Ryan Newman rounded out the top five in the finishing order. Jeff Gordon moved to second place in the point standings, 174 points behind Matt Kenseth, who finished 14th.
Said on Infineon Pole Position
Talk of late has been dominated by “Young Guns,” today at Sonoma, the talk was of “Hired Guns.” Boris Said, hired to drive the No. 01 Pontiac in a one-off deal, won the pole position for the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Said set a new track record with a qualifying lap of 76.522 seconds, at an average speed of 93.620 mph, around the 2-mile road course. The pole is the first for Said, who has previously competed in six Winston Cup races in his career. Robby Gordon will join Said on the front row on Sunday, starting from the outside-pole position. Ron Fellows, another “Hired Gun,” qualified in the third spot, while point leader Matt Kenseth starts fourth.
