Chevy Rock & Roll 400 - Richmond International Raceway
Newman Rocks and Rolls to Sixth Victory
Ryan Newman claimed his series-leading sixth victory on Saturday night, rocking and rolling to victory lane in the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Newman took the lead for the final time at lap 277 and led until the checkered flag. Newman led 125 of the event’s 400 laps, while Jeff Gordon led the most laps at 126. The 2002 Rookie of the Year kept his bumper clean and pulled off a .159-second victory over Jeremy Mayfield, the seventh of his two-year career. For Mayfield, the second-place finish was his best effort of the season and first top five. Ricky Rudd crossed the finish line in the third position, equaling his best finish of 2003. Jeff Burton brought his Ford home in fourth and Rusty Wallace finished fifth, giving Dodge three of the top-five positions. Points leader Matt Kenseth extended his lead atop the standings to 418 points after notching a seventh-place finish.
Skinner Takes Richmond Pole
Mike Skinner will start the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway from the pole position in a backup car. Skinner, subbing for the injured Jerry Nadeau, wrecked his primary car in the first practice session, brought out the backup car and put in on the pole. Skinner turned in a lap of 21.464 seconds, at an average speed of 125.792 mph, to earn his first pole since winning the top starting spot at Richmond in 1999. It is the sixth pole of Skinner’s career. Rookie Greg Biffle will start from the outside pole, while Mark Martin and Ryan Newman start from row two.
