Pennsylvania 500 - Pocono Raceway
Newman Wins at Pocono
Ryan Newman was able to stretch his fuel mileage at Pocono Raceway and win the Pennsylvania 500 from the pole position. Newman held off Kurt Busch’s hard charge at the end to win by a margin of .307 seconds. The victory is the series-leading fourth of the year for Newman and his second in the last three races. Newman lead the most laps on the day, pacing the field for 88 of the race’s 200 laps. Busch brought home a second-place finish from the Pocono mountains, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in third. Earnhardt regained second place in the point standings, leapfrogging over Jeff Gordon, who was involved in an accident. Michael Waltrip finished behind his teammate in the fourth spot, while Terry Labonte finished in the fifth position.
Newman on Pocono Pole
Last season, Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson battled for the Rookie of the Year title. On Friday afternoon, the duo battled for the Pocono pole position with Newman coming out the victor. Newman qualified in 52.830 seconds, at an average speed of 170.358 mph, to capture the top starting spot for thr Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. For Newman, it was his series-leading fifth pole of the season and the 12th of his brief career. Johnson, who sat on the pole at Pocono earlier this season, will start from the outside of row one in the second position. Elliott Sadler will start from the third position, while Bobby Labonte and John Andretti start in the top five.
