Sylvania 300 - New Hampshire International Speedway
Johnson Repeats at Loudon
Jimmie Johnson brought out his broom and swept the events at New Hampshire International Speedway in 2003. Johnson won both races in Loudon on fuel mileage. Johnson took the checkered flag for the Sylvania 300 some 6.24 seconds over second-place Ricky Rudd. Johnson was forced to overcome an accident on pit road where Jeff Gordon, his car owner and teammate, hit three of his crew members. The three crewmen were banged up but not seriously injured. Johnson led 12 laps on the day, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the most laps, staying out front for 120 circuits. Johnson, who has won three times and The Winston this season, becomes the first driver to sweep both races at New Hampshire. Rudd’s second-place effort was his top finish of the season. Joe Nemechek came home in the third position, followed by Bill Elliott in fourth and Earnhardt Jr. in fifth.
Yet Another Pole for Newman
Ryan Newman won yet another pole position on Friday afternoon, taking his seventh top starting spot of the 2003 season. Newman’s qualifying lap of 28.561 seconds, at an average speed of 133.357 mph, broke the track record that he set at Loudon last season. The pole position for the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway is the 14th of Newman’s career. Terry Labonte grabbed the outside pole position while rookies Jamie McMurray and Greg Biffle start from row two.
