Johnson Wins at the Magic Mile
Jimmie Johnson was able to conserve fuel and take the checkered flag in the New England 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Johnson took the lead with 37 laps to go, stretched his gas mileage, and held off Kevin Harvick by 1.582 seconds to win for the second time in 2003 and for the fifth time of his career. Harvick crossed the finish line in second place, followed by Winston Cup points leader Matt Kenseth in third. Kenseth increased his lead in the standings to 234 points over Jeff Gordon. Gordon led a race-high 133 laps but finished in 24th. Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon rounded out the top five in the finishing order.
Loudon Qualifying Scrubbed, Kenseth Inherits Pole
Qualifying for the New England 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway was washed out on Friday, after rain pelted the track for most of the day. The starting lineup was completed in compliance to the NASCAR rule book. Winston Cup point leader Matt Kenseth inherited the pole position and will lead the field to the green flag on Sunday afternoon. Jeff Gordon will line up second on the starting grid, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Bobby Labonte start third and fourth respectively.
