Season Sweep at Martinsville for Gordon
Jeff Gordon outran his teammate to pull the season sweep at Martinsville Speedway. Gordon also swept both pole positions at Martinsville this season as well. Gordon finished 1.036 seconds ahead of Jimmie Johnson to claim his second win of the season (both at Martinsville) and the 63rd of his Winston Cup career. Gordon, the four-time series champion, led a race-high 313 of the event’s 500 laps to score his fifth career win at Martinsville. The race featured a record 117 laps ran under the caution flag. Johnson crossed the finish line in the runner-up spot, while Tony Stewart came home in third. The top five in the finishing order was made out by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman.
Gordon Sweeps Martinsville Pole Positions
Jeff Gordon brought out his broom during time trials for the Subway 400 and swept the season’s pole positions at Martinsville Speedway. Gordon posted a qualifying lap of 20.220 seconds, at an average speed of 93.650 mph, to earn his second consecutive pole at the .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval. The pole is the fourth of the season for Gordon and the 46th of his career. Ward Burton, starting his final race for Bill Davis, qualified on the outside pole position, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Burton’s teammate Kenny Wallace in row two.
