JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 42 HAVOLINE DODGE:
"I think the motor broke. I don't know what part, but it was vital (smiles).
It won't run without it. It's too bad for the Havoline Dodge. For my first
time here, I was probably doing better than I expected. This is a really
hard racetrack and I told the guys before the race that our car was probably
better than I was here. It's just a really tough place to get around. I had
a top-10 car which, I think, that's all that I could ask for my first time
here. Something broke in the motor. I don't know what it is; I'm not an
engine guy. It broke right when the caution came out. I rode around there
spitting smoke out of the tailpipe and when I got to my pit stall it died.
We tied to push start it and the motor locked up. They are going to look it
over and see if they can get me back out there but I think the Havoline Dodge
is done." IT LOOKED LIKE YOU CLEANLY WORKED YOUR WAY TO THE FRONT. "The lap
cars are horrible. There were a few of the laps cars that I thought 'Man,
get out of the way' but they told me that it was going to be that way. I was
really patient. I probably called them every name in the book in the car
(smiles). There was just nothing that you could do about it. It was one of
those deals."
GREG BIFFLE IN THE NO. 16 GRAINGER FORD WAS THE RAYBESTOS® ROOOKIE OF THE
RACE AT MARTINSVILLE. BIFFLE FINISHED 18TH AND COLLECTED TOP RAYBESTOS®
ROOKIE HONORS FOR THE FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON.
"I made a mistake there early. I took a rubber out of the right rear
thinking that I was loose off and I really wasn't. It was probably tight and
then I was giving it gas and making it loose. It's part of the learning
curve here. We were really good at the beginning. I thought we were going
to have a top-10 car for sure. We probably did, I just made the wrong
adjustment and it kind of cost us." HOW HARD IS IT TO RACE HERE? "It's
really hard. It's really tough. After coming here testing and practicing
before the race started I said that I think Bristol is easier. It may not
have been easier but it's dang close, I tell you. It's a tough place." DID
YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE WITH THE HEAT? "No, none at all actually. I feel
pretty good. I was a little nervous about 500 laps here but I feel pretty
good."
TONY RAINES, NO. 74 BACE MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET:
"Well, I tried to get 500 laps but I didn't make it (smiles). We struggled.
We didn't have a typical car today: it just didn't want to respond to
adjustments. We weren't very good but we worked on it and ran all the laps
that we could and we finished. We learned some stuff, what to do and what
not to do so maybe in the fall we can run a little better." IS THIS A TINY
STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR YOUR TEAM? "It was a step but I don't know if
it was in the right direction. Not that it was a bad step, but there are a
lot of good teams and good cars out there that are struggling so I know that
we are not idiots and we're not stupid or anything. We just didn't hit on
the package that this car wanted. It's my first race here in about five
years. There were some good things. There just wasn't enough good things."
RANDY GOSS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 16 GRAINGER FORD:
"That was a good day for us. We're sorry that we lost that lap, but
finishing all the laps but one is good for the team and good for Greg,
really. We haven't been here in two years. We haven't been here since we
raced the trucks. I thought (Greg) did a really good job. He did an awesome
job of driving the race car, I thought. He stayed out of trouble and right
there at the end they lined up four Roush guys and you know there is going to
be trouble. We stayed out of that and didn't cause anything. It was a good
day
for us. The car ran good; our pit stops were real good. We weren't in a
great spot back there (pit position) to give them a chance. The one time we
had trouble, we followed the 30 and my jackman couldn't get between them.
There was like just barely room if you had run between them it would have
been a gamble to not get run over. We had a good day there. We have a lot
of stuff to build on. We have a race car now that we say 'Well, now it's
this far off instead of this far off and we need to go work on this race car
some and try to come back and run better with it."
JACK SPRAGUE, NO. 0 NETZERO PONTIAC:
"If we could have started the race halfway through, we'd have been pretty
decent. The NetZero Pontiac was really loose but we kept adjusting on it and
got a little better there at the end. We got a couple of laps down and there
wasn't much we could do after that. We finished as high as we could have of
the cars on our lap."
BIFFLE RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE PRESS POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE
"It was a pretty good day. It started out to be a really good day. We raced
up into the top-10 or we were 11th there and I took a rubber out of the right
rear spring and got the car way too tight. It just killed me; I went a lap
down. Not many guys these days tend to try and give a lap back but Junior
slowed up today and tied to give a couple of guys a chance. I thought if we
could have got back on the lead lap we would have had a decent run, maybe a
top-12 or 10th maybe. I'm really happy with the way the guys did today, you
know, eighteenth, I've got to be happy with that. It was pretty exciting the
last couple of laps in front of me, anyway." THE FIRST PART OF THE RACE WAS
VERY CLEAN. WOULD MORE CAUTIONS HAVE HELPED YOU STAY ON THE LEAD LAP? "I
just needed to get that rubber back in the right rear spring. It's tough to
race here. You have cars a lap down, cars on the lead lap. It's really
tough to keep your track position and try and race the guys that you are
racing. I learned a lot today and that's what it's about my first year. I
made a mistake by tightening the car up. I learned a valuable lesson there
and hopefully it will help me in the future."
